cautious. Hiding this under the ballpark bench left a couple of variables open. There would be a short time between when the package was left and we arrived, otherwise we might have seen who left it.â
âAnd during those few minutes someone could have stumbled upon the envelope.â Judith thought for a moment. âHeâs thought of everything. At least if someone had gotten hold of it, they wouldnât be able to crack the password. Of course, now we have the same problem.â
âIt would be something that we know,â Luke said. âSomething that we could figure out but no one else could.â He rubbed his chin. âWhen you got your call, did the voice mention any names or numbers?â
âNo ⦠wait. Yes. A date. February 27.â
â2-2-7? What about a year?â
âNo mention of a year.â
âBut you know the year, donât you?â
Judith paused. Of course she knew the year of her secret. She would have preferred to have forgotten it, but that wasnât going to happen. â1984.â
â2-2-7-1-9-8-4. No good. Thatâs seven numbers.â
âDrop the nineteen.â
âThen that leaves only five numbers. Well ⦠maybe this way: 022784.â He entered the numbers. An error message told them the password was invalid.
âWhat about you?â Judith gazed at Luke. âYou said the caller knew your secret. Did he use a date with you?â
âYes.â The admission came slowly. âMay 30.â
âTry it.â
Luke combined the numbers and typed 530227. Again an error message.
âWhat time did you get your call?â Judith pressed.
âI donât remember. Maybe 9:45, or something like that.â
Judith thought. âMine came a little earlier. About 9:30. Put my date first.â
Again Lukeâs fingers pressed keys: 227530. He hit the Enter key.
The file opened.
Judithâs phone rang.
five
J udith almost came out of her seat. Her heart galloped. She let it ring two more times before she had calmedherself enough to look at the caller ID display. It was Terriâs office phone number. âMy administrative assistant,â Judith explained and snapped open the phone. âYes, Terri.â
âYouâve been avoiding me.â
It wasnât Terri. The voice belonged to Marlin Find, stepson and royal pain. âIâve been busy.â
âWith what? I called your cell phone earlier. I left a message for you to call me. You didnât.â
âSo you thought youâd use Terriâs phone?â
âI figured youâd at least answer a call from her.â
âWhat do you want, Marlin?â
Judith caught Luke looking at her. She lowered her voice.
âWe need to talk about the upcoming board meeting. Have you read my memos?â
âYes.â
âYou havenât responded.â His words were terse and bore an edge.
âYou already know how I feel about your suggestions. Youâre not ready.â
âIâm more than ready.â
âNot to be president of the firm. Iâm keeping that job.â She turned in her seat so that her back was to Luke.
âUnder my proposal, youâd still be chairman of the board and the public image of the company. I just want to take the burden of the day-to-day work off your shoulders.â
Judith felt anger rising in her like magma in a volcano. âThe answer is no.â
âI have support on the board.â She could hear the smile in his voice. âItâs just a matter of time.â
âWhen push comes to shove, your supporters will see what youâre really after and side with me.â
âGee,
Mom
, you sound like you donât trust me.â
âTrust is earned, Marlin.â
âWhen will you be back in the office?â
âWhen Iâm good and ready.â She hung up.
âAh, family,â Luke said. âWarms the heart, doesnât
