She was embarrassed.
"Dude, why are you making her work so late? You should give her a day off." Daniel chipped in. "Actually, you should give her today off.”
Daniel was poking his nose into my matters now. I wanted to punch him in the face. He had no right to tell me what to do. But I couldn't show my anger to both of them.
"Yes, I'm fine with that. And I didn't ask her to work the whole night." I paused and looked in Zoe's eyes. "Anyways, you can take the day off. I'll get the Genna case documents prepared by Rachael."
"No," Zoe spoke fast. "It's nothing. I will stay and work with you. Just give me half an hour and I will be back ready to work. I apologize if I disappointed you with my behavior." She glanced in my eyes.
"Are you sure you want to do this?" Happiness danced inside my heart.
"Yes, I do."
"Fine, then. Go home, and come back fresh." I smiled at her. I wanted her around me.
"Dude, you’re going to burn her out, pushing her so hard." Daniel tried to register his disapproval when Zoe left my office.
"I gave her the choice." I hunched my shoulders up in the air.
"I know. But this work is not letting her come closer to me. Why don't you leave her off for tonight? I want to go on a dinner with her." He asked.
"Not tonight, dude. Not until this case is prepared." I replied firmly.
"Then you have to promise me that no matter what, you will give her a free day after this case is done." He begged me this time. He was desperate to have her in bed.
"I'll try." I forced a smile on my face.
"Thanks, buddy." He smacked my shoulder. "And you really scared me for a few minutes when you caught her in your arms. I thought you were going to kiss her."
He actually had read my mind, I wanted to kiss her. "No I wasn't." I lied.
Chapter 10
Zoe
"What? He kissed you in the office?" Olivia almost dropped her pizza. "Wow, I didn't expect him to be so, what should I say, cocky?" She was smiling like a child now. "Tell me everything, how was it? Was it good? Was it passionate?" Olivia bombarded me with questions when I told her that Mark kissed me. I knew she would get everything out of me easily.
"It was just a kiss, nothing more. We were very close and he must have flown in with the wind."
"A minute-long kiss doesn't happen with the wind, Zoe. That means something and you know it. And trust me; every man pours his heart into his first kiss. I bet he meant something."
"It meant nothing, Olivia. It was a fluke."
"Did he say that himself?" she held my arms.
"No, he didn't. Actually I did. I thought it was a fluke, and it should be. He is my boss, and from the day I joined the office, we have only fought and nothing else. Why would he just decide to kiss me then?"
"No, Zoe, I can't believe that it was just a kiss. A kiss can only happen when there is something else going on in the kisser's mind. He must have been attracted to you or secretly adoring you−something must be there."
"It's not possible. He's just a hotshot lawyer, whom I saw for the first time at the interview. How could he know me for long?"
"Okay. But I want to meet this guy. I wanna check him out." Olivia's eye lightened with a tiny spark. She must be having some idea in her mind. If she has some idea, she would be trying it for sure.
"What do you have in mind?" I asked. I should know that first before introducing her to Mark. I can't afford losing my job because of some foolish idea of hers.
"It's nothing. I just want to meet him and see how he reacts."
"Reacts to what?" "Reacts to my flirt. I'll go haywire on him and check him out. Do you think I'm so bad that he would ditch me?" she winked at me.
There was nothing to decline in her. I was a girl and had a good figure, but Olivia was the sharpest and sexiest girl I knew. She was the dream of many boys in our college. And sometimes even I became jealous by looking at Olivia's well-maintained body. On top of that she looked like a film actress. That's why she never had any trouble
