what it is. But she knows there is something different about us. That is why I decided to try this at dinner. You hear their thoughts as well as I do, yet nothing from Holly. Why is the Densinne not working on her?â
He looked up at me. When he saw my expression, his face paled.
âAmira,â Jai thought with a panicked tone.
âWhat?â Amira sounded irritated.
âLook at Holly,â Jai thought. I whipped my face away from Jai and looked at Amira.
âYes, Jai, sheâs beautiful tonight,â Amira said without looking at me.
âNo,â Jai insisted, sounding a little embarrassed. âLook at her now!â
Amira glanced away from my parents and looked at me. So many thoughts ran through my mind. If I could hear their thoughts and those of my family, couldn't they hear mine? But Jai had just said they couldn't.
âWhat about her?â Amira thought.
âDo you think she can hear us?â he thought in what I assumed passed as a whisper.
âHear us?â Amira asked. âWhy? No one has ever been able to before.â
âI know,â Jai whispered his thought again. âBut look at her face. There is definitely something going on inside her mind right now.â
Amira narrowed her eyes at me. I narrowed mine back.
I made a conscious effort to think the words in my mind, âWhat is going on here?â
âOh!â Amira thought, sounding stunned.
âI can hear you. You have been listening to our thoughts!â I accused.
Amira wrung her hands together then placed them into her lap as if to hold them still. Jai dropped his napkin onto his plate as he stood up and strode to the other end of the table. He stepped between Marshal and Delilah then leaned down to whisper.
I heard Marshal think, âWhat do you mean she can hear us?â He looked up at me as he thought it. Jai whispered again. As Marshal's expression changed from confusion to concern, I knew he believed it.
âBut that is impossible,â Delilah thought. âIt does not work that way here?â Her last thought sounded more like a question.
âIt is possible,â Marshal thought, âshe can hear us now. Is that right, Holly?â
I shook my head. Not denying I could hear him, but that it was happening at all. âThis is crazy,â I thought.
âJai, do something,â Amira commanded.
Jai stood up straight, squared his broad shoulders, and looked at me. His eyes narrowed, and his mouth turned down. I felt a small ripple of fear at the expression in his eyes.
I tore my eyes from his and looked at my parents. They seemed to notice something was up because Marshal and Delilah had stopped talking to them for a moment. Dad glanced at Jai as he stood behind Marshal. I heard my mom thinking their behavior was odd. Delilah engaged my parents in conversation.
âMom! Dad!â I thought. âCan't you hear them? Do you hear me?â I screamed in my mind as loudly as I could. My neighbors all blinked, but my parents didn't bat an eye.
I debated on what to do next. I couldn't stay here and listen to everyoneâs thoughts and act normal about it. I wanted to scream, out loud this time.
Jai thought, âGive me a moment. I might have somethingâ¦â He excused himself and disappeared through the dining room door. Seizing my chance, I leaned toward my mom across the table.
âMom,â I whispered. âI'm not feeling well. I need to run home.â I glanced toward the door Jai had gone through then back at the other neighbors.
I stood before Mom could object and rushed through the kitchen toward the front door.
âJai,â Amira shouted. I was pretty sure it was in her mind because it had that odd echo to it. âShe's leaving!â
Before reaching the front door, I heard Jai call, âHolly, stop!â
âNo!â I shouted in my head.
âPlease. I have to explain.â He sounded worried.
I swung open their
