dirty dance with him. He stinks.â
I donât even know who these people are, let alone know how they smell. I need to become part of the loop. As my sometimes friend Kane likes to say, âLife is all about contacts.â
âWhoâs Laura friends with?â I ask.
âJamie Yee, Sally Bliss and that Cathy girl.â
My ears prick up. âCathy Savage?â
âYeah.â
Hmm. My mind starts putting two and two together, and Iâm not talking about maths. Cathy is friends with Ashleigh Simpkin â who would be the love of my life if she only knew how I felt about her. There must be a way I can use this to my advantage.
I chew on a pencil to help me think. âIf I told you something to tell Laura, do you reckon she could tell Cathy and then she could pass it on to Ashleigh Simpkin?â I ask Gavin.
He gives me a look. âDo you like Ashleigh Simpkin?â
âUmm. No comment.â
âWhat do you want me to say?â
âUmm.â I chew on my pencil again and accidentally swallow some lead. âTell Laura that ⦠I like Ashleigh Simpkin.â
He laughs.
âBoys!â says Mr Relf. âI hope youâve finished exercises one, two and three. Your test is on Friday.â
I take a look at my book. Iâm up to exercise zero.
âIâll see what I can do,â Gavin whispers.
For the first time in ages, I reckon Iâve done something smart. Now all I have to do is sit back and wait for the good news.
*
âBad news,â says Gavin.
Itâs the next day and Iâm getting the low-down, after a dressing-down by Mr Relf for not doing my homework.
âThere was a bit of a mix-up.â
âWhat happened?â I ask.
âLaura told Sally Bliss to send a text message to Cathy, and she was gonna email Ashleigh, right?â
âRight â¦â
âBut Sally Bliss got your name wrong. She called you Gavin Ross.â
âBut thatâs your first name!â
He gives a guilty smile. âI know. Then Cathy emailed Ashleigh and wrote that I like her.â
âYou!?â
âBoys!â says Mr Relf. âIâll be over in a second to check on your work.â
I start whispering. âBut you donât like Ashleigh. I do.â
He shrugs. âWell, she is pretty cute, you know â¦â
My fingernails dig into my exercise book. âYeah, I do!â
I donât say any more. Mr Relf is standing over us. âWeâve got an exam on triangles tomorrow and you boys wouldnât know your isosceles from a sausage,â he says. âIâm going to enjoy marking your tests. I need a good laugh.â
The bell rings and I get ready to give Gavin a mouthful as soon as we make it outside. But I donât get the chance because a girl runs up to us.
âHey,â she says to Gavin.
âHey,â he replies.
I elbow him in the ribs and Gavin nods in my direction. âCathy, this is Tony. Tony, Cathy.â
âHey,â I say.
She gives a little wave. A friend of Ashleighâs actually knows me! I start feeling pretty good.
âGuess what?â Cathy says to Gavin. âAshleigh likes you.â
Now I feel bad.
âBut she wants to know if you really like her, or if itâs just a joke. She likes someone else as well and she needs to know.â
âWho?â I say.
Cathy turns to me. Sheâs nice to look at, though her nose is a bit too small for her face. âWho what?â she says.
âWho does Ashleigh like?â
She gives me a tiny smile. âThatâs whatâs called a secret.â
Cathy looks back at Gavin. âTell your friend not to be so nosy. Although looking at his face, it must be hard.â
I feel my nose. Gavin sniggers.
âWell?â she asks Gavin.
âDonât be so nosy, big nose,â he says to me.
Cathy slaps him on the shoulder. âNo, I mean, do you really like Ashleigh or is it just a
