asked.
I remembered something.
âI should check my messages,â I said, pulling out my cell phone.
âSure,â Mike said obediently, as though we were already an old married couple.
I pressed the message button and listened to my friendâs voice.
âHello, Cammie? I just wanted to tell you something,â she was saying in a breathless voice. âIâ¦I donât know how to say thisâ¦butâ¦well, okay, here it is.â
Janineâs voice paused. I knew what my friend was about to say before I even heard the words. I felt my heart beat furiously with a mixture of fear and unwanted envy.
âI have something to confess. I told Sarah Walker about you and Mike. I didnât mean to, but she kissed me and the next thing I knew I was telling her everything!
âAnd thereâs something else I have to admit. I guess that makes two things Iâm confessing, right?
âSo hereâs the second one. Iâ¦well, Iâve never actually slept with anybody, Cammie. Thatâs right, Iâm a virgin. Itâs all been a big act, my stories about being so experienced.
âWhen Sarah was feeling my breasts, I couldnât help it. I just had to tell her that, too. I thought sheâd laugh. But she was really, really nice and totally sympathetic!
âSo here I am now at her house. Itâs extraordinary. I mean, outside itâs just a trailer in a trailer park. But inside! Thereâs velvet and candles and marble. And she has the most wonderful family. And Iâm so bummed because theyâre going to be leaving town! I wish Iâd gotten to know Sarah earlier.
âAnyway, they left for a while earlier this evening, but now theyâre back, lavishing me with attention I never thought possible and Iâm so sorry I called her trash. Oh, Iâve only got a second more to talk. Theyâre about to come get me.
âIâm all ready for them. Iâm in this amazing white gown Sarah gave me. Sheâs going to walk me down this red corridor to a black chamber. Cammie, this is the coolest moment of my life. Iâm about to lose my virginity! Iâm nervous, sure. But Sarah tells me Iâll be over the threshold in no time. And I canât wait to find out whatâs on the other side.â
The Orifice
The first time Maureen and Tom got pierced together was right after she got him to ask her out. They were both seventeen.
Getting Tom to ask her out was the biggest triumph of her four years at St. Sebastian Catholic School. Maureen knew she was pretty in a wholesome kind of way, with auburn hair and an athletic figure. She didnât have any trouble getting guys.
But Tom was in an entirely different league from her. He was the schoolâs perfect stud: rich, straight features, an easy way around other guys. Girls did anything to get him into bed.
Tom was headed for prelaw at an Ivy League school while Maureen was headed for the state university. His family lived in Ashford Hills Estates, the only neighborhood in town where you had to pass through security to enter. There was a wall between themâof class, of expectations, of possibilities.
But it was when she saw him in church one Sunday that she knew she could have him. He was kneeling a few rows away from her, and she watched how he looked at the statue of Christ. It was the same way she stared at it, with longing and shame.
Afterwards, Maureen pulled her courage together and walked up to Tom.
âHi,â she said, âI think weâre in the same class at St. Sebastian.â
âOh, right,â he said.
âDonât you love this church?â she asked. âItâs so beautiful. And the statue of Christ must be one of the best anywhere.â
Tom nodded. âItâs cool, yeah,â he said nonchalantly.
Maureen smiled. âEver wonder how it would feel to be pierced like that?â
Tom swallowed hard. He didnât answer. Maureen moved in
