disaffected girls from the Christian Union, or the one or two specimens from the Home Counties to go along with all this nonsense. It's all just a beautiful pretext for a damn good session.
Lucy as always spent hours on the costume, although I'm not so sure how she can justify all that leather in the name of some ersatz cult. I would have thought druid outfits, loose gowns and all the rest would have been more appropriate.
Upstairs the girls, as we have explained the initiation ceremony, are disappointed that they are not allowed to wear anything more fanciful than civvies, but LW and JS and certainly myself prefer it that way.
JS has designed the most fantastic preliminaries. What a load of meaningless gobbledy-gook, purloined from sacred texts and the Cabbala I expect, but utterly convincing.
LW's painting of the centaur certainly looks as if it is drawn from the mannerist school, either that or he just can't draw. That was the most implausible centaur I have ever seen, the legs were far too long for a start.
There are two girls: Amanda and a June. They are both beautiful. Amanda has long blond hair and one of those fresh peachy faces to die for. She's very upper class, and I wouldn't have been surprised if she hadn't had a dose of this kind of thing already. She wears a starched white blouse and a pleated maroon skirt. June looks totally submissive. She looks beautiful too, in the floral print dress, her substantial breasts curving deliciously through the cotton material. I thought then that she would agree with everything we were to say. They both talk such tosh about the spirit.
Amanda has a boyfriend who is apparently some kind of anthropologist. He's very avant-garde she says, and he approves of her trying to gain knowledge in other ways than studying formally at university. June nods her head all the time when Amanda speaks. Every time LW or I say the word 'pagan', I believe that she becomes wet between the legs. They all know about JS's reputation, so what we have in store for them can't be that much of a shock.
LW, JS and myself go down into the basement to prepare the ceremony. We light the candles. LW has this eerie organ music he has recently discovered from a fellow practitioner, although I must say JS and myself prefer the East European chants.
Lucy tells me later how she held both the girls' hands and explained to them the nature of what she called the 'expurgation' ceremony for initiates, and the three stages: communal awe, castigation and finally expurgation. It sounded as if she was fantastic, because I know that she makes all this kind of stuff up off the top of her head.
Amanda tells Lucy that she is still not sure why we are called the Order of Janus. Lucy gives them the usual mumbo-jumbo. The girls seem suitably impressed.
One last wonderful innovation LW has made to the slab, as he calls it, is to put it on wheels. The thing weighs a ton and I'm sure one of us one day will get a hernia trying to push the thing, but LW seems to think that it adds much needed gravitas to the whole event.
The last thing Lucy tells the girls as they sip tea in LW's humble living room is that if they truly want to be part of the glorious Order of Janus then they must submit to everything, no matter what we do to them. By participating in the ceremony they are taking a vow of obedience which includes not talking about what happens to anybody outside the order. The girls solemnly agree.
By this stage PCK and DE had also arrived, late as usual. It was JS's turn to be master of ceremonies. Lucy had made a superb horse's head for him out of paper-maché. There were howls of laughter when he put it on, and it was difficult to keep a straight face during the ceremony.
Lucy leads the girls down the narrow steps and into the basement, disappearing again to don her costume.
JS begins. 'Dear Janusians - we gather here on this solemn day to bring to the fold for your pleasure two new acolytes. We will sacrifice them to you
