she scolded.
Cole considered a joke about going to the bathroom but reconsidered given her stern expression. âAn echo led me,â he explained. âIâm sorry.â
âAny respectable echo knows to stay on the paths,â she complained.
âItâs my first time here,â Cole apologized.
âAnd your last if you donât watch yourself,â she said.
âIs there a problem?â Joe asked, approaching. He was tall and well-dressed, with a stubbly beard. Cole could imagine Joe back home in California, playing with his band. Joe flashed his most disarming smile.
âHeâs with you?â the woman asked.
âYes,â Joe said. âThanks for finding him. Iâd lost sight of him.â
âDonât give me the lovable-scoundrel routine,â the woman said. âIt carries no weight at the Seven-Cornered Shrine. Is he Cole?â
âThatâs right,â Joe confirmed.
She squared up to face him, hands on her hips. âPlease donât raise your voice in the gardens. You were crying out like you would for a dog lost in the wilderness! Have you no sense of decorum? This is a place of tranquility. Be responsible! The boy wandered off the path.â
âMy apologies,â Joe said, placing a hand on his chest. âWonât happen again.â
âIt wonât for sure if I ban you,â she said. âWatch yourselves. Youâve been warned. Youâre on your way out I hope?â
âYou guessed it,â Joe said. âGood day.â
He laid a hand on Coleâs shoulder and guided him along the path toward the shrine.
âWhere are the others?â Cole murmured as they entered the ornate building.
âOut in front,â Joe said. âSally got a disturbing tip, so we all cleared out. You were the last.â
âDid she get any leads on her sisters?â
âWait until we have more privacy,â Joe said.
A large coach awaited them in front of the shrine. Joe guided Cole to the horse-drawn vehicle, and they both climbed inside the compartment. Cole joined Hunter and Dalton on a cushioned bench facing Mira, Jace, and Joe. Jace drew the curtains closed as the coach started rolling.
âWhere were you?â Mira asked Cole. âWe looked all over.â
âHe was right by the shrine,â Joe said. âHeâd gone off the path into the bushes.â
âI needed a restroom too,â Dalton said.
âNo,â Cole said. âI was with an echo.â
âHow much did you spill?â Jace asked, an edge to his voice.
âI told who I was looking for,â Cole said. âI didnât say anything about you guys.â
âWe can speak freely,â Hunter said. âIâm blocking the area inside the coach from echoes.â
âSally learned some scary stuff,â Dalton explained to Cole.
âI met a woman from my childhood,â Mira said. âZelna Laperne. She was a maid who spent time with me at the castle. Sheâs been an echo for decades now.â
âDid she have any leads on your sisters?â Cole asked, unsure what exactly he hoped to hear. Part of him wanted the info he got from Sando to save the day.
âZelna could only confirm that Nazeem is looking for them,â Mira said. âIt sounds like heâs hunting you too, Cole.â
âHe didnât seem happy the last time we met,â Cole said.
âZelna warned me that the shrine is swarming with his agents,â Mira said. âNazeemâs influence in the echolands has grown really strong almost overnight. Nobody had heard his name until recently. When Zelna recognized me, she made contact to caution me to stay away from shrines. Theyâre being heavily watched. I thought we should regroup before asking more questions.â
âI helped Mira round up the others,â Joe said. âWe told everyone to abort. Nobody gained any vital knowledge about Honor or
