taken a corridor all to herself.
Kyle had cut off the power to all the other corridors with the exception of the one where the captives were being held and the one leading to the bridge, dining hall and engine room.
He finally arrived at the corridor designated for captives. It was empty except for Jess sitting in a chair outside their door. The black protective skin-suit she wore stretched across her muscles, and her elbows rested on her knees. She was staring at her boots and cradling her chin in her hands.
On Earth she had once been the chief financial officer of a large West Coast infomercial company, but after the invasion she’d been sold to a space brothel, where they’d picked her up from.
“Picked up” was the wrong choice of words. She’d stolen clothes from one of her customers and walked past security. The clothes, along with her six-foot-one-inch frame and short brown hair had gotten her waved through as one of the male patrons. From there, she had boarded their vessel and hid in an unsecured cabin. Because of the sheer size of The Vengeance she had remained undiscovered for almost a month. Kane had finally caught her in the kitchen stealing food.
As the sounds of his footsteps echoed down the hall, she straightened. Since he hadn’t asked her to guard the captives, he approached with a questioning, “Jess?”
    She frowned. “Yes?”
    “What are you doing?”
“Can’t you take a guess? I’m keeping watch. Shit, someone has to do it. They’ve been fucking all night long.”
He widened his stance. “JB asked permission and personally, as long as the females are willing, I don’t see the harm.”
“So, it’s okay they’re fucking the hostages?” She straightened. “Is this where you came after you left my cabin?”
“If the females are willing, I don’t see the problem. And no, I didn’t. But if I had, it’s not your issue anymore.”
“Don’t get all testy. Besides, you can try to fuck whomever you want. We’re through.” Her gaze boldly met his. “My options are wide open. I might actually get a hard dick now.”
Kane didn’t take the bait. Jess was now free to fuck every man on the vessel if she wanted too. She might just do it to make him jealous. Why would he be jealous? He wasn’t trying to settle down.
“Isn’t there something else you could be doing right now?”
She flicked her head toward the door. “Yeah, interrogating those bitches.”
He stood his ground. “Thanks, but no thanks. Ryan is meeting me here.” Not a moment too soon, Ryan rounded the corner. “If I decide we need to assign guards for the females, I’ll let you know. Right now you’re dismissed.”
She huffed under her breath. He took a few steps away, giving her space. Jess was confrontational to say the least.
She got up and kicked the chair from behind her, where it fell on its side. “Whatever.”
He could have made her right the chair, but honestly it didn’t matter. She’d just go to the dining hall and throw the chairs all over the place. She needed to go to her room and cool off.
While walking past Ryan, Jess lurched in his direction and snarled. Without flinching, Ryan shook his head as he passed her.
Ryan stopped in front of Kane and watched Jess walk away. “What’s her problem?”
His fights with Jess provided the crew with constant amusement. He didn’t want to fuel another round of laughs and jokes. “Nothing, let’s go.”
Kane entered the sliding door with Ryan at his back. Like most of the crew, Ryan also preferred the black protective skin-suit that was made for inner-space travel. The African American was a lot shorter than Kane. He stood five foot nine but his weight of two hundred and twenty pounds made him appear more like a pro wrestler than a pilot. The thirty-two-year-old spoke three different languages fluently and had excellent negotiation skills. But it was his skills as a fighter pilot with two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan that had made
