spent the whole afternoon cooking and that’s way too much for me alone.”
“Oh... That’s a great idea. Well, if you don’t mind then just come here. Bring everything you’ve got because there’s a lot of people. Do you want me to send you someone?”
“Yes maybe. I’ve cooked a lot and I don’t think I’ll be able to carry everything by myself.”
“Okay, I’ll send you my driver.”
Bruce’s driver came to pick her up half an hour later. It wasn’t Jack though. This time, it was someone she had never seen before. Probably a new recruit, she thought. It was quite late and there weren’t many cars in the streets. On the way to Wilson Corp.’s headquarters, Jennifer started to feel the anxiety building up.
What did I do? Why did I offer to bring my food to all these people? I have no idea who they are, or what they like. All of them work for Bruce and I’m sure they are very sophisticated. I don’t have anything fancy to offer, is it going to be enough?
Jennifer closed her eyes and took several deep breaths. There was nothing she could do anymore. She couldn’t turn around and go home. She was expected and on her way to help Bruce spend a long night of hard work. At least, she was helping him as much as she could. It wasn’t going to solve his problem with Kenichi but she was determined to support him. She didn’t want Bruce to lose his company and she had to be involved in his life, whether everything was perfect or not.
Without a doubt, nothing had actually been easy for her since she had started her relationship with Bruce. From the outside though, it probably looked very different. People around her probably imagined that she was living like a princess and hanging out with an American Express black card to go shopping. It couldn’t be further from the truth. First of all, it wasn’t her style and she wasn’t interested in taking advantage of Bruce’s money. She had ambition and pride. If she wanted to spend money, it had to be her own money. And second, Bruce wasn’t an idiot. She couldn’t imagine him getting ripped off by any girl. He was way too smart and clear-sighted for that.
However, she could tell that a lot of her former colleagues were jealous: none of them had contacted her since she had quit her job. Jennifer had thought some of them were her friends, but she’s been wrong about them. It wouldn’t surprise her if most of them were gossiping behind her back and resenting her: it was certainly the case. She had never paid attention to what other people thought about her, until she came back to have sex with Bruce in his office. She had ignored everybody on purpose, knowing that nobody would be able to understand what they were going through and how much she actually cared about him. It wasn’t a simple crush with a rich and handsome man: Bruce was the one she had always been waiting for. But because of his unusual status, Jennifer couldn’t share her true feelings and her problems with anyone - except her grandmother.
The limousine finally eased to a stop and Jennifer suddenly saw the door next to her being opened. A doorman quickly arrived with a cart to carry Jennifer’s boxes and plastic containers. She was literally delivering food to her former boss and smiled at the idea.
She took the elevator with the doorman and felt nervous. She was getting closer and closer. It really meant a lot to her to know what Bruce and people like him thought about the quality of her food. One thing that made her calm down a little was her Grandma’s advice: Jennifer had cooked with authenticity and sincerity. She hadn’t done it with any idea in her mind other than producing the best. Her best. She hadn’t calculated anything or planned to please anybody in particular, which was a good thing in this particular case. If she had started with the idea to feed Bruce’s lawyers and accountants, it would have been impossible. She would have freaked out and been under too much pressure to
