townâs dying and youâre mourning the loss of the women. Thatâs so you, Mac.â
âWhat can I say? I consider women to be one of the benefits of being born a man.â
âSix in the past four years?â Vince had been drunk, but not too drunk to be floored by that number.
âI actually fudged on that.â
âThere were
more
? Holy shit, Mac.â
âNo, fewer. In two cases, we broke up and then we got back together later on. I counted them both twice, because it seemed almost like two separate affairs since each time I saw someone else in between.â
âItâs a wonder you can keep them straight, or that you get anything else done.â
âI have a healthy sex drive, thatâs all. Besides, you admitted to having three different women, so technically Iâm only one up on you.â
Vince realized that made some kind of crazy sense. âGuess so.â
âPlus, as I recall, you had quite the time with the ladies of Bickford, yourself. When I walked into Sadieâs and Georgie was there, I wondered if she was one of the reasons you wanted to come back here this weekend.â
Bullâs-eye. But Vince wasnât about to admit that heâd never forgotten Georgie. âNot really. I figured sheâd be married with a couple of kids by now.â
âInstead sheâs single and cuter than ever.â
Vince wouldnât have used the word
cute
to describe Georgie. Beautiful and sexy, yes. A maddening challenge, definitely. But certainly not
cute.
âYou donât agree?â Mac glanced over at him. âI always pegged her as your type.â
âWell, sheâs not. And more to the point, Iâm not hers, either.â
Macâs chuckle was followed by a soft groan of pain. âRemind me not to laugh. It hurts. But let the record show that youâre still hung up on Georgie and frustrated by her lack of interest.â
âAm not.â
âYes, you are. Iâm sure this isnât news to you, but insisting on this roundup isnât helping your cause any. Iâm ready to call it quits, and Travis could be talked out of it, so why not forget the whole thing? Youâd stand a much better chance with her if you abandoned this so-called quest.â
Vinceâs temples throbbed, but heâd had a hangover before, and it would be gone eventually. âYou donât have to go if you donât want to. But with or without you and Travis, Iâm heading out there tomorrow morning with a rope and a plan.â
Mac blew out a breath. âThen Iâll go with you, if for no other reason than to keep you from making an ass of yourself.â
Too late.
But Vince kept that thought under his hat.

Georgie opened the store as usual at nine, and once sheâd unlocked the doors and turned on the cash register, she surrendered to the impulse that had nagged her ever since waking up. She called Edâs stable. âVince Durant rented three of your horses last night for a trail ride he was taking with his friends,â she said. âDid they get off okay?â
Please say no.
âTurns out they didnât go.â
Georgie did a quick fist pump. Then she remembered that Ed might have been affected financially by the cancellation. âIâm sorry if you lost money, Ed.â
âActually, I didnât. Vince and Mac walked down here first thing and gave me the whole amount in cash. Said it was the least they could do. Then they helped me unsaddle the horses. They were real sorry about making me saddle them for nothing, so I gave them a discount for tomorrow morning, same time.â
âThat was nice of you.â Damn it. They werenât giving up. Sheâd so hoped for that.
âCanât see any reason not to, with the generosity they showed me today. We talked about the Double J, and what a shame it was that it shut down, and then the fire.
