idiot?
Madison gave a little laugh at him shaking her head. She turned and began walking to the door. She didn’t hear him following so she turned back around.
“…and yes, I would love an escort home.”
Relief flooded him! For a moment he thought he’d ruined everything. He opened the door for her on the way out and she blushed, feeling ridiculous to be acting like such a girl.
They walked slowly down the road, letting the night sink in. The change of venue had broken their momentum in conversation and now they were both quiet. Madison walked in the direction of her apartment guiding the way. She hadn’t had someone walk her to the door, or buy her drinks, or laugh at her jokes in a long time. Connor was so handsome, and intelligent, they’d connected right away and it seemed almost impossible that things were so easy between them.
When they were getting close to her apartment she slowed down even more. “I had a really good time tonight.”
“Me too, I was hoping—” he cleared his throat. “I was hoping that I could take you out again…on a proper date.”
    “This wasn’t a proper date?”
“You know, one where I pick you up and drive you home.”
She blushed and even in the moonlight he could see the pink rising in her cheeks.
    “I would love that.”
    “Maybe…”
“Maybe tomorrow?” she said impulsively. Madison didn’t want to rush anything or dive in too quickly but she’d had such a nice night. She could feel herself being drawn into this and she wasn’t the least bit concerned.
“Tomorrow,” his voice rose up and she knew he was happy too. “I’ll pick you up?”
    “Same time?”
    “Same time.”
They had made it to the front door of her building. She looked so perfect he moved in a few inches, thinking about kissing her. Thinking about her face close to his, feeling her breath mix with his own.
“I look forward to it, Madison S.”
He backed up a few steps not ready to turn away but forcing himself down her walkway. Once she’d walked inside he turned and began his walk back home.
When he’d made it back to Main Street he dialed his brother.
“I think I might need your help.”
“Is it Barbara?” Émeric asked at once interested.
“It is most certainly not Barbara. But, I think I’m going to need a car and probably a townhouse just in case. By tomorrow night…”
“Wow, Connor,” his brother’s voice had turned sweetly surprised and Connor rolled his eyes happily. “She must be really something.”
“She is,” he looked back the way he’d come. “As you would say, she just might be the one.”

When Connor got home from his first meeting with Madison he went straight to work. He needed a car, a house, and clothes. All the things that normal people had in the price range that they would normally have them. Émeric had promised to come over that night to get things moving because Connor was far too nervous about leaving it all to tomorrow to get taken care of. The second thing he did after calling Émeric was call Madeline.
“Mr. Brooks?” Madeline’s voice sounded genuinely concerned and slightly groggy.
“I know it’s late and I know this is uncalled for but I will give you a raise, bonus, car or whatever you’d like if you could only come over and help me with something.”
“Something’s happened? Is it your family? A business deal?”
“Nothing like that that, just come.”
Connor hung up with his assistant. He needed to get to work now. If he’d been smart he would have put their next date off a day or two, but that seemed equally as impossible as the task at hand.
Madeline came first, then Émeric. Connor was pacing back and forth with a romantic comedy on in the background.
“What are you watching?” Émeric said as he came into Connor’s study.
