a hunch Jake did the same. He had won. She didn't like the situation but she was intelligent enough to know that to go on fighting it was only going to lead to more scenes such as the embarrassing and frightening one which had just taken place outside Maggie Compton's home. Her one option was to get rid of Jake Devlin, and there simply wasn't any time, even if she could convince her mother that he was not the right bodyguard for her.
Her mother needed the next couple of weeks as worry-free as possible. That left Sabrina at the mercy of her new bodyguard
"Got it all worked out?" Jake finally asked as he slowed the MG for the turn into the underground garage of Sabrina's apartment building. She didn't bother to aslc how he knew her address. Teague would have given it to him. The mysterious Mr.
    Teague seemed quite efficient
"You mean am I going to accept Teague's and my mother's choice in baby-sitters?"
Sabrina didn't pretend not to know what he meant
"Something like that. Which parking slot is yours?"
"Number thirty-four. Yes, I'm going to tolerate Ihe situation for now. I don't have much choice, do I?"
"No." It was a simple statement, not intended to goad her further.
But its very matter-of-factness was more annoying than just about anything he could have said. Sabrina found herself deliberately biting her lip in order to keep from flinging back the sharp retort she felt he deserved-Something told her he would simply counter each new attack with whatever degree of effort it took to squelch it Very professional, she thought with a groan as she slammed open the car door and jumped out
The ride up to her apartment on the eleventh floor took place in utter silence. A brooding one on Sabrina's part; a seemingly unemotional one on Jake's. He politely took her key at the door and let them into her cheerfully decorated home. Without any apology he went in first and stood silently in the darkened interior for a long moment Then he nodded calmly at Sabrina, who walked in obediently, lifting her eyes heavenward in supplication. Two weeks of this kind of thing? She was going to go crazy!
The apartment was furnished precisely to her taste. Sabrina no longer worried about pleasing anyone else these days. Peach and soft green and light beige provided the main tones of the color scheme, creating a light, fresh-air feel in the living room. A huge arrangement of brilliant long-stemmed gladioli occupied the center of the wide, low table in front of the peach-colored banquettes. The table was white and highly polished and, in addition to the flowers, was littered with a collection of books on King Arthur and medieval history.
The sight of the books reminded Sabrina of her plans for the rest of the evening.
"I've got to finish packing," she stated, moving to collect the books. "What about you?"
Jake shrugged dismissingly. "I'll pick up my stuff on the way to the airport in the morning."
    "Where's your car?"
"At my apartment After I learned where the party was, I drove back home and I took a cab to your friend's house."
"I see." Sabrina glanced around uncertainly. "Well, make yourself comfortable, I guess," she said ungraciously. "I'm going to go pack."
For the next hour she did exactly that, tossing all the books into one suitcase and her clothes into another. As she bustled around the apartment, Jake seemed to ignore her, occupying himself by thumbing through one of her medieval texts. His concentration appeared total, she realized at one point. He didn't even glance up as she walked through the living room carrying a handful of lingerie she had just taken out of her small dryer. A very serious man, she thought with an inner sigh. Too bad Mr. Teague hadn't been able to come up with someone else in Portland, someone who had a more easygoing style and a sense of humor.
She didn't really feel particularly awkward with him in the apartment, however, and that was probably because of his serious, quiet way. There were no innuendos or
