his head and spoke softly. âI canât cure death.â
âOur only loss in the mission and itâs from friendly fire,â I said, leaning back and wiping my eyes. âWe donât do friendly fire on the Celestial. We have eyes in the sky, we have telepathic communication. Weâre better than this!â
âIt is the first in a while,â John said sadly, changing back to human and catching the young archer as he fell, stricken with guilt. He passed him to Meredith. âFirst of many.â
He raised his head and concentrated.
Guan Yu appeared on the grass next to us and looked down at Graceâs body. âShe will be given full heroâs honours.â He looked around, then fell to one knee. âI thank you all for returning the Gates to the Heavenly Host.â
The archer was sobbing, his head in Meredithâs chest as she held him.
Guan Yu rose. âAre they all definitely gone?â
John concentrated. âAll gone.â
âI will need replacement guards.â
âYou may borrow some Elites from Er Lang,â John said, and Guan Yu disappeared.
John listened for a moment, then nodded. âEr Langâs complaining that we just gave away all of his remaining Elites. Iâvetold him he can hold an evaluation on the main court tomorrow morning.â
âOur students arenât ready for that,â I said.
âThey never are. Meredith, escort the rest home,â John said.
He took my hand, and everything disappeared.

John, Er Lang and I stood at the edge of the main court on the Mountain and watched the Disciples run through the weapons drills in perfect synchronicity, with Liu at the front leading them.
Er Lang crossed his arms over his green armour and nodded. âGood. I was worried youâd keep the training focused on disablement. Itâs obvious these are trained to kill.â
âOf course,â John said. âThe training isnât about technique any more.â
âYouâve brought them up to speed remarkably quickly.â
The God of War shrugged. It was what he did.
Er Lang leaned around John and spoke to me from under his green burnished war helmet. âHowâs your training proceeding? Thereâs a distinct possibility that the Jade Emperor will order you to join us in the Elites.â
âHeâd better not,â John and I said in unison.
âIâm too new an Immortal and close to useless,â I added. âI canât fly safely unless Iâm in snake form, and I canât teleport at all. I did it a couple of times before I was Raised but now the skill eludes me. Itâs driving me nuts.â
âThe Jade Emperorâs probably blocked you from learning until after the wedding, so you canât change your mind and make a run for it,â Er Lang said.
âThat makes sense,â John said. âDecided yet?â
Er Lang ran his eye over the students. âNone of these are good enough.â
âI know that,â John said, his voice low, âbut you need to take some anyway. The Jade Emperor must be guarded.â
âAre they genuine volunteers?â
âThey are.â
âDo you have sources other than the Earthly for Mountain cadets?â Er Lang said. âHas the Tiger provided any Horsemen? Dragons?â
âHorsemen, yes; a good number came here after the fall of the West. We have a few Red Warriors who survived the fall of the South as well.â
âMost of the phoenixes are in the Northern Heavens regrouping for another attempt,â I said. âTheyâre more focused on winning their volcano back right now.â
âThey wonât do it,â John said without looking away from the Disciples.
âWe know that, but they donât,â Er Lang said.
âWhat?â I said. âHow do you know?â
âWeâve seen it,â John said. âThey wonât re-enter the South for at least three
