necessary.
Later, she was standing in the kitchen, chopping celery sticks and dicing carrots when her thoughts drifted to the handsome stranger she had met earlier. He was dazzling, and she could tell that he was older than she was, but his face bore a very distinguished look. She had looked up from her purse, ready to fly into a rage when her mind was arrested and imprisoned by those brown eyes that pierced into her own. She had lost her words then, and her footing as she was preparing to trip, when he held onto her, and there was no mistaking the longing she had felt then.
Ever since Mark had left, she’d not been intimate with anyone, and the way Phillip had held onto her reminded her of the touching she craved. She would have easily walked away, ignoring the coffee stain on her clothes, but she was glad he had insisted to the contrary. A big grin spread across her face now, and she grew excited at the prospect of getting to know him better. The fact that he was financially secure was a big bonus to Melody now, though her independent spirit would not allow her to fend off of him, she reminded herself. She sliced and diced and chopped and julienned until she was satisfied with the end result. The atmosphere was permeated with the sweet aroma of her cooking, and she could not remember the last time she had outdone herself in this manner.
She walked to the phone on the kitchen wall and dialed the number for the building manager. “Ms. Clover, please,” she said when the porter answered.
“This is Miss Clover,” the elderly woman answered.
“This is Melody, from 25. Is anyone using the rooftop tonight? I would like to arrange a dinner there.”
“Hold on,” she said, and Melody could hear her flipping the pages of her log book. “No, it is free tonight.”
“Perfect. Put me down for tonight.”
“It will cost you extra,” the woman added. “Would you like Sam to arrange for lighting and music?” She asked.
“That would be nice, thanks. And I will pay whatever it costs.”
    “Okay. Sam, the lady...”
Her voice faded as Melody hung up and she could imagine her barking orders to the handyman. She had only just put the phone down when it rang again, just as she was turning to walk away.
“Well, aren’t we busy today?” She said to the inanimate thing. She picked it up and answered. “Is this Melody Mitchell?” She heard an almost familiar voice ask her.
“Yes, this is Melody,” she replied, her breath now rolling up into a ball and preparing itself to lodge in her throat.
“I am calling from PC Innovations.” The woman paused, and Melody’s breath caught in her throat. This was the same office she’d gone to earlier, the one that had mixed her up.
“I hope this isn’t another error,” she replied bluntly. “I was already there this morning.”
“No, Miss Mitchell, this call is deliberate, and once again I apologize for the inconvenience to you.”
“What is the nature of the call this time, then?” Melody inquired.
“It would appear there is an opening after all, and you have already been chosen for the position. Congratulations, Miss Mitchell, and welcome on board.”
Melody froze when the woman had stopped speaking. As far as unconventional went, this day had to be at the top of the list.

CHAPTER 2 - MELODY

“Miss Mitchell, are you still there?” The woman on the phone asked.
“Yes, I am, but how is this possible, and what position is this for?” She wanted to know.
“This position was recently made by the Director himself. You had applied for the personal assistant position at the office, but there is a position open for a house assistant: that is, someone who will handle his other affairs outside of the office, and other matters directly associated with this company, as well as the other organizations he is a member of. Would you be interested in this position Miss Mitchell?” The woman asked.
“Y-yes,” Melody stuttered, not feeling like she was in a
