area.â
âYou nervous?â Tina asked.
âHell yes Iâm nervous! I donât think he intentionally wants to kill me, but he may end up doing it accidentally. Heâs in pretty good shape. Honestly, Iâve never seen anything like him in person. I thought dudes like him were all Photoshopped.â
âHoly shit,â Tina repeated. âHe knows youâve been sitting on the couch for the last year and a half, right?â
âI think he can probably tell that just by looking at me.â Hollyâs gaze drifted back to her reflection in the television screen and she quickly closed her eyes, shaking her head. What had she gotten herself into? âI figure Iâm just going to show up and focus on staying alive. But Iâm going to give him your number in the event of an emergency just in case, okay?â
âNo problem.â
âRemember, I donât want to be kept alive on machines.â Holly shuddered, the memory of Bruce at the end still painfully etched in her mind.
âDonât even kid about that. Youâre going to be fine. Iâm sure he knows what heâs doing,â Tina said before asking, just to verify, âSo heâs cute?â
âDisgustingly.â
âLike Bob Harperâand-Dolvett-fromâ Biggest Loser cute?â
âCuter,â Holly said without hesitation. âI canât believe you even watch that show. What could you possibly find appealing in it? You weigh a hundred pounds soaking wet.â
âItâs inspirational,â Tina replied.
âItâs television. Did you ever notice that when they get to that ranch and weigh in, they get to wear next to nothing? There they are, feeling like total pieces of crap, and they have to let the whole world know they weigh four hundred pounds wearing nothing but a pair of shorts and a sports bra. Then by the end, when their skin is still all floppy and saggy, theyâre all wearing tank tops and pants made of so much spandex theyâre practically girdles. The only thing inspiring is seeing them being able to put some clothes on. Donât even get me started on how they work out for eight hours a day and a week later have only lost three pounds. What kind of bullshit is that?â Holly ranted. The thought of Tina watching that show grated on Hollyâs nerves like sandpaper. It only fueled her friendâs misguided notions about Hollyâs lifelong struggle with her weight.
Tina continued unaffected by the rant and still fully engrossed. âI wonder if this guy is going to scream in your face and make you cry and have a breakdown to get to all your issues?â
âYouâre not helping with the nervousness, you know,â Holly said. âBesides, I donât think this guy is that invested in my situation. I think he pretty much just took pity on me.â
âOr he wants to make some money.â Tina laughed again.
âProbably both,â Holly replied.
âPlease tell me you at least went out and bought some fancy new workout clothes.â
âI did buy some sneakers,â Holly admitted. âIâm not really into the fashion-show aspect of this. Plus I donât think thereâs enough spandex out there to fool him. I thought I would worry about the important stuff, like breathing and staying conscious.â
âItâs not about fooling anyone, Holly. Itâs about setting the stage for success.â
âDid you just throw a Weight Watchers ad at me?â Holly asked suspiciously.
âProbably, and since you brought it up, did you check out those pills I was telling you about? The ones to help you lose weight?â
Holly could feel her teeth start to grind. She knew Tina was only trying to be helpful. She also knew Tina had a particular fondness for miracle cures, in addition to being clueless on the subject. Every now and then, much to Hollyâs dismay, Tina would stumble onto some
