kitchen today she noted sadly. Looking around the apartment through the glare of the sun entering the windows, Angela tried to locate Philip.
    Fuck!
Her heart sank when she accepted the truth that he was not there. The leather chairs were empty, and the washroom door was wide open, devoid of life. He had left her there alone, just like she should have known all along. There was no way someone like him could be interested in a girl like me she thought. This had been a giant lie all along, one she had fallen for hook, line, and sinker.
The anger at herself rose as she realized just what he had done. After dressing her up and parading her around his friends like a giant trophy, Philip had gone and left her for the curb. She was nothing more than his prized pig at the fair, before being led out back to slaughter.
Tears welled up in her eyes, threatening to fall, but she didn't let them. Her heart was still filled with disbelief, for everything had felt so perfect with him, so natural, as if they belonged together. It was all a lie she told herself, holding the sheets tight to hide her naked body while she located her clothing.
She piled her dress into a bag, once again donning her faded yellow diner uniform. It was the only clothing she had on her still, and there was no way she was wearing the dress. If it hadn't been so expensive, she would have left it. But being broke, she needed every penny she could get.
Just as she was getting ready to put her shoes on, the door opened. Philip walked in and stop short, looking at her sharply. Probably just forgot something and I surprised him by being up already, she assumed as they stared at each other.
"You thought I had left," he accused her, after a moment of his brain working over what he was seeing.
She hesitated, unsure of what to say. After all, why would someone like him want to be with her. He had his choice of all the slim, gorgeous models he could want. There was no way he was attracted to someone like her. Her lack of response confirmed his accusation, deflating him a little.
"Sit down," he said, motioning to the table. Stiffly she took a seat, staring out the window, not meeting his gaze. The last thing she wanted was to be suckered in by those gorgeous emerald orbs of his. Once was enough pain for her, thank you very much!
"Angel, I didn't run out on you. Now, I'm going to drive you to work and then, after work, I'm going to pick you up. We need to talk about something."
She furiously blinked back the tears, knowing just what 'needing to talk' meant. It was the same line her last boyfriend had used on her, before leaving her stranded here in the city with no way out.
"Okay," she muttered, thinking to herself that there was no way she was going through that again.  They got up, and he drove her to work. The entire time she was quiet and he kept looking over at her, trying to figure it out.
He leaned over to kiss her before she left, but Angela simply offered him her cheek, then fled the car. Once the dim, ratty walls of the diner closed in around her, she let the tears come. Mia found her in the back, sobbing in a corner. The kindly old lady held her and comforted her until she was ready to speak.
"He's going to end it after work," she said, explaining how he had been gone in the morning, coming back after he had hoped she would be gone. Then how he needed to talk with her after work, the dreaded breakup talk.
"I just can't deal with it right now. Is there any possibility you could let me go early today Mia? Please?" She looked desperately at the caring eyes of one of the few people in the city she considered a friend.
"Of course dear, of course. But -"
"Thank you so much, Mia, I really appreciate it." Angela wasn't even paying attention to what the old woman was trying to tell her she was so overcome with relief at being able to avoid Philip for the rest of the day. She could be home before he even arrived if she took the busses she knew.
    Before Mia could
