out.
Did that make the woman a little nutty? Yes. But was she dangerous? Probably not.
“He’s working in his office. There’s an investment opportunity on Jade Lake and he’s obsessed with getting a boat now.” Amalie winked at her conspiratorially. “You know our boys and their toys, right?”
Chandra forced a laugh, but her stomach churned. Was that going to be the thing, now? Couples jokes? Maybe she should’ve explained about the friends with benefits thing after all. She didn’t want Amalie getting her hopes up that it could be something more.
    Like you are?
She pushed the subconscious thought aside abruptly and said a quick goodbye to Amalie before scurrying down the hall like her ass was on fire, hoping to avoid contact with the rest of her pack.
If Jax had meant what he said, and wanted to keep it strictly sex, there was no point in letting anyone else in on their arrangement. Things got around, and the last thing she wanted was for poor Ryan to be affected by this. It would be terrible for him to get ideas about her becoming his stepmom, but it would be just as bad if he wasn’t ready to face the idea of his father moving on.
Someday she’d have a family of her own, and, if she was lucky, a son like Ryan. One whose laugh would warm her from the inside out. And a mate who made her feel safe and special, and loved.
A tingle spread from her chest as she recalled her time with Jax. Whatever happened, even if it ended tomorrow, she’d never forget it.
She was halfway up the stairs when she caught it again…Amber's stale but lingering perfume. Chandra’s instincts went white hot, another stark warning that something was amiss. She wasn’t here anymore, that much was for certain. Chandra would smell her now that she’d tuned her senses to the other woman’s scent, but this couldn’t be ignored for even another second.
She headed to her bedroom, on a mission to solve this mystery before she did anything else for the day. Snatching up her cell phone, she tapped out a quick Google search.
The Naughty Kitty wasn’t far, maybe twenty miles away. She tapped her finger lightly on the case of her phone, mulling over her options. She hated to admit it, but Amber was too pretty to be relegated to the strip club’s afternoon shift. She had the face and body for prime time, so odds were, if Chandra went there during the day time, Amber wouldn’t be there. She could use the opportunity to ask around, see if there was anything strange about her, or if maybe she was a notorious weirdo stalker at least. Then again, if she waited until tonight, she could try to talk to the rat face to face.
    Decisions, decisions.
She couldn’t get into Liam’s office right now, and the need to be doing something to get to the bottom of things won out. She washed up a second time, using a fair dose of mandarin orange body lotion to mask Jax's scent, before changing and jogging back down the stairs and straight out the door.
When she arrived at The Naughty Kitty less than an hour later, she was stunned to find the parking lot half full. Granted, it was the weekend, but the concept that there were at least thirty grown men so impatient to see some naked tail that they figured noon was a good time to get out to the club was surprising to say the least.
Note to self: If in need of fast cash, consider stripping.
She shoved open her car door and stepped out, taking a deep breath of the crisp air. It was all going to be fine. Maybe she was being paranoid, but that was okay. Her pack was her family, and family was all she had. Better to be paranoid than caught off guard.
She strode toward the door, smirking when she saw the sign hanging above it featuring a female cartoon cat with a Jessica Rabbit body encased in a bustier. Naughty Kitty, indeed.
She stepped through the doors, conscious of her carriage. Time to look confident and comfortable. The fact that she was a woman alone would definitely cause some speculation, but she'd
