Seeing some of the tension leave Bo’s face made Sam happy.
Sam retrieved his juice bottle, then followed Bo outside. Bo locked the door behind them. As they descended the porch steps, Bo slipped his hand into Sam’s. “I know how much you must hate having to sit out the field portion of this investigation. Thank you for being so understanding about this.”
Sam squeezed Bo’s fingers. “It’s fine, Bo. I don’t mind.” The look in Bo’s dark eyes said he knew better, but he didn’t say anything, for which Sam was grateful. They were lucky Janine had agreed to the investigation at all. He didn’t like being left out, but there wasn’t much point in saying so. If it would help Bo help his sons, then Sam would do as Janine wanted and keep his complaints to himself.
For now, anyway.

The rest of the week flew by in a blur of phone calls and paperwork. Friday night arrived before Sam was ready for it. Standing on the front steps of the early twentieth-century house where Lee, Janine and the boys lived, Sam promised himself for the umpteenth time that he would remain calm and polite no matter what Janine said or did.
He was a professional, and by God he intended to act like it. He would be the mature one if it killed him.
Which it just might, he thought glumly as the front door swung open to reveal Janine on the other side.
Beside Sam, Bo tensed. “Hello, Janine.”

“Hello, Bo. Everyone.” Shooting a hard glare at Sam, she stepped back and swung the door wide. “Come in.”
They all filed through into the cozy foyer. Dean stopped beside her, beaming as if there was nowhere he’d rather be than standing beside the grimfaced woman. “Thank you, Janine. It’s all right if I call you Janine, isn’t it?” Janine blinked at him. “Yes, of course. That’s fine.” “Excellent.” Dean leaned against the doorframe, his eyes shining with a near-painful sincerity which Sam knew for a fact was completely false. “I’m thrilled to be here tonight, Janine. Thank you for having us here.” Looking flustered, Janine fiddled with the tiny gold cross hanging around her neck.
“Um. You’re welcome.” She glanced toward the stairs rising from the back of the foyer.
“Oh, here comes Lee.”
Sam fought back the urge to laugh at the relief on Janine’s face. He knew how she felt. When Dean turned on the charm, it could be a little overwhelming. Sam wondered what Janine would say if she knew Dean was just doing it to throw her off balance.
“Hi, guys,” Lee called as he descended the last few steps. He shook hands with each of them in turn, a wide smile on his face. “I’m so glad you could do this. I’m anxious to get to the bottom of whatever’s going on here.” Bo’s smile looked almost normal. “So am I, Lee. Hopefully we’ll be able to find an explanation for the unusual events here. This is such an old house, some of what you’ve all experienced will almost certainly have a more mundane cause than paranormal phenomena.”
“Meaning old houses creak a lot and tend to have noisy plumbing.” David set the camera case he was carrying on the floor and turned to Bo. “So. Where do we start, boss-man?”
“Before we do anything else we need to tour the house and see the spots which are the most active paranormally speaking. Andre and I can do that while the rest of you unload the equipment and set up the computer.” Bo looked over at Lee and Janine, who stood side by side at the bottom of the staircase. “Is that all right with y’all?” 38

Lee nodded. “That’s fine. Janine and I can show you the house and point out all the places where we’ve experienced strange things.” Janine crossed her arms. “Well, since I haven’t experienced any of these so-called phenomena myself, I can’t very well show you anything. I think I’ll just stay here and keep an eye on things while you show them around,
