underpinning of tension that they couldn’t seem to shake and trying to pick themselves up by their boot straps and carry on was tough.
After a few moments pause Alec said,
“Ummm…. Well…. Yeah, yes….. I would like to get a bite to eat. Thank you for the offer mom,” he smiled a silly little crooked grin.
Ann smiled ever so sweetly back at him and said,
Well…. Okay, then. We’ll leave in like five minutes, change your shirt please,” she asked as she turned to walk away.
He turned his face away from her so that she wouldn’t see him rolls his eyes because she hated when he did that every bit as much as he hated when she got all overly motherly towards him. Nevertheless, they had a very loving mature relationship based on honesty with one another and that seemed to work well enough.
For dinner, his mother took him to a quaint little Italian restaurant just ten minutes or so from their family home. As the hostess led them to their table, Alec supported his mother with his hand on the small of her back.
In her eyes, one of his father’s greatest accomplishments in his life was teaching his son how to be very respectful towards ladies and he did a good job of it. They sat down and looked over the menu trying to figure out what delightful delicacy they would entertain for the evening.
And when the waitresses arrived at the table to take their order they had determined what they were having to eat. Alec ordered shrimp diablo extra spicy, he liked it hot.
Ann ordered her predictably usual simple plate, with a dish of manicotti. She tended to eat like a tiny little bird, which was undoubtedly why she was so strikingly thin. But she was so lovely regardless.
There was a precious motherly light that resonated in Ann’s personality. It was somewhat impossible not to think fondly of Ann, everyone loved her for that. She was the kind of lady that made you feel good about yourself just by being around her. She was truly one of a kind.
For his birthday, his mother took him out to dinner at his favorite local eatery which was where she requested that the staff sing happy birthday while bringing out a pre - ordered specialty red velvet cake with cream cheese icing.
Deep down she knew that the taste was his absolute favorite and he was worth the effort times about a million, just as any mother would think of their only son. She loved seeing his smile.
The evening came and went before either of them could believe it. They had chatted their time away as they ate and enjoyed each other’s company. Ann looked down at her buzzing cell phone and noticed the time, it was getting late and she knew that she needed to get up extra early the next morning to catch her flight. So she suggested that they head home for the remainder of the night.
She was having so much fun that she didn’t even notice when she paid the check that the server had written her phone number on the back of the receipt nor did he. So, as they were walking out the door, she called out for him saying that he had forgotten something at the table. He walked back over and she said,
“Here, this was meant for you… Well, that and I just wanted to wish you a happy birthday…… Sorry, I overheard your conversation. I’m getting off work just now, would you like to go for a drink or something with me?” she said looking at the floor and fidgeting her feet back and forth.
He looked over one shoulder and then the other shoulder, thinking that she was talking to someone standing behind him. But she was not. She batted her long black eyelashes so flirtatiously.
It was as if she were desperately trying to convince him to do what she wanted him to do. She had ideas of her own that he knew nothing about but if he said yes then she would surely show him.
Once Alec settled on the truth that she was in fact speaking directly to him, he said,
    “Ummm….. Yeah, I mean sure….. I guess…. I am Alec and you are?”
    “Oh, right. So, I am in….. Uhhhhh….. I
