sheâd enjoy the extra exercise. Dad said she was getting a bit fat anyway. But even with Janie using Pixie for rides, itâs still going to cost a lot to keep her stabled at Greengates. I still donât know if Mom and Dad will agree.â
Lilyâs face fell. She hadnât thought of this. It seemed as if there was a flaw in her awesome plan.
Storm jumped up with his paws on Lilyâs leg and woofed for attention. Lily looked down at him. âYou could ask your mom and dad to help,â he suggested in a soft bark.
It was a few seconds before Stormâs words sank in. âThatâs it!â she burst out, her eyes widening.
âWhat is?â Adjoa said, puzzled.
âI just had a brilliant idea. Come on, Adjoa. Weâre going back to talk to my parents!â She quickly outlined her plan.
A look of hope came over Adjoaâs face. âDo you think theyâll agree?â
âThey have to. Itâs Pixieâs last chance,â Lily said determinedly, turning on her heel, confident that Adjoa would now follow her on Pixie. At her side, Storm gave an encouraging yelp.
Chapter TEN
Later that evening, Lily sat at the kitchen table eating a pizza with her mom and dad. Storm was curled up under the table.
âYou did a great job persuading Adjoa to come home,â her dad said. âHer parents were almost out of their minds with worry. Theyâve been on the phone saying how great you are. Well done, sweetie.â
Lily felt herself blushing. âAnyone would have done the same.â
âIâm not sure thatâs true,â her mom said, patting her hand. âWhat I still canât figure out is how you found her so quickly and got up to the field near Greengates in record time.â
âIt must be all the exercise Iâve been doing. Mmm. This pizzaâs delish!â Lily said, quickly changing the subject. She slipped a small piece under the table for Storm to munch. âMo-om? Da-ad?â she said in a persuading voice. âIâve . . . um . . . got something to ask you.â
Her parents exchanged glances. âI hope this isnât about having your own pony again!â Mrs. Benson said.
âOf course itâs not,â Lily said brightly.
âThank goodness for that!â her dad said.
Lily paused for effect. âItâs about me having half a pony!â
Mr. Benson frowned. âRun that by me again.â
Lily grinned. âWhat I really mean is sharing a pony!â She explained about Janie agreeing to take Pixie into the stable and being a riding school pony. âBut itâs still going to be very expensive, so Adjoaâs parents might decide to sell Pixie anyway. But they wonât if we help with the costs. And then Iâd be sort of sharing a pony with Adjoa. Iâd be able to groom Pixie and ride her sometimes. What do you think?â
âI think Pixieâs going to be one busy pony!â her dad said, smiling. âBut itâs an interesting idea.â
Lily held her breath and had all her fingers and toes crossed. At least her dad hadnât said no right away like he usually did.
âI know you, Lily. Youâll want to be up at Greengates every night, looking after Pixie and grooming her,â said Mrs. Benson. âIâm still worried that your schoolwork could suffer.â
âI know I might want to do that, but I wonât, because Iâll know that I have to take turns with Adjoa,â Lily said honestly. âIâll just be so happy to be able to ride Pixie sometimesâand pretend sheâs all mine until I get a pony of my own one day!â
Her mom and dad exchanged glances.
âWell, when you put it like that, it sounds like a fair arrangement,â her mom said.
âAnd itâs the only way Lilyâs ever going to give us any peace! So the answerâs yes,â her dad added.
âYay!â Lily flung herself at her parents
