behind her. He looked ready to do it, to go do whatever had to be done.
âNo,â Xander said. âI promised Dad weâd wait.â
Thereâs that look in his eyes again , Toria thought. Heâs not telling everything.
Keal looked over his shoulder. He stiffened. âHey, whatâs the wheelchair doing up here?â he said. âWhereâs Jesse?â He turned wide eyes on them. âAnyone seen him? Jesse?â
âHe was downstairs,â Toria said. âHe came to help when Nana started to get pulled away. He tried to stop her from going, but I guess he had to let go.â
âI thought someone was with him,â Nana said. âWhen Jesse let go, someone else was there, in the hall. I thought it was you or Eddie. I was so panicked, I didnât think about it until now.â
Then it dawned on Toria: âTaksidian!â she said.
Keal started for the staircase. âDownstairs?â
âBy my bedroom.â
âWait!â Xander said, coming out of the antechamber. âHe might still be here . . . waiting.â He looked back into the small room. âIt canât change, right? The portal canât go away until they come back, can it?â
âI thought you knew that stuff!â Toria said.
He nodded. âItâll be okay.â He bit his lower lip. âJust in case, could you and Nana sit in here? Just for a minute?â
âXander!â Toria yelled. âIt tried to eat her!â
âNever mind,â he said, starting for Keal.
Toria grabbed his wrist. âWhat about Dad and Dae?â she said.
âI told youââ
âWhat else?â She raised her eyebrows.
His worried look grew deeper, became something like pain. He said, âIt was wet and cold over there. I could feel it blowing in, and I saw Dad land in water.â
Toria nodded. She remembered the bitter chill blowing in when sheâd approached the antechamber. He tried to shake off her hand, but she clenched it tighter. She said, âAnd?â
âOne of the items he took,â her brother said. âIt was a life preserver. It had the word Titanic on it.â
His eyes found Nanaâs, and Toria knew what he wanted: he hoped she would say something like, Oh, that old thing? Thatâs nothing. Iâve seen it before. Leads to a museum.
Nana didnât say that. She just stared, her face muscles tight.
Xander pulled himself free. âIâll be right back.â And he ran.
When Keal saw him coming, he disappeared through the landing doorway to shoot down the stairs.
âNana?â Toria said.
âItâll be all right, dear.â Her eyes were on the antechamber. They didnât match her words. They said, Maybe it wonât be all right. Maybe nothing will be all right ever again.
CHAPTER
eleven
âWe canât stay here, David,â Dad said. âThe shipâs going to break in half any minute now.â
Davidâs teeth clattered. His entire body trembled with cold. It felt like heâd been sprayed down and put in a freezer. Dad didnât look much better. âBut, D-D-Dad . . . B-B-Bob!â
They both looked at it. Smeared, shaky, incomplete.
âYou,â Dad said, âyou didnât draw it?â
âIt w-w-was Mom. Had-had to be.â Or Nana , David thought. Had she ever been here? Had she been putting Bob on things for the same reason they had started do it, to let someone know sheâd been there, to help them find her?
âIf it was Mom,â Dad said, âshe would have gotten into a lifeboat by now.â He stood, pulling David up with him. âWe have to go. When the ship breaks up, it sinks right away. We canât be on it or even near it.â He tugged David toward the railing. âHold this.â He gave him a life preserver. âItâs from the house. If we get separated, itâll lead you to the portal home.â
David slipped the
