wore it on very special occasions, it undoubtedly was.
âItâs lovely to see you again.â Having patted Carmenâs face, Rose turned and said, âAnd youâre Rennie. We havenât met before.â
Stepping forward to drop a kiss on each of her cheeks, Rennie grinned. âIf we had, Iâd definitely have remembered. Mmm, you smell gorgeous, like a Hollywood goddess. Itâs like kissing Greta Garbo.â
Heâd always known how to charm the opposite sex.
âAh, get away with you!â Flushing with pleasure, Rose playfully slapped his hand. âGreta Garboâs dead.â
âItâs like kissing Greta Garbo at the height of her beauty.â Rennie was undeterred. âWhen she starred in Queen Christina . Thatâs one of my all-time favourite films.â
âTruly?â Roseâs face lit up. âGreta Garboâs my all-time favourite actress. I watched Queen Christina on the television just the other week. They were showing it on a Sunday afternoonââ
âIâve got it on video,â said Rennie. âAnd Ninotchka .â
âOh, I just love Ninotchka !â
âAnd Camille ,â Rennie pulled a face, âbut I donât love it as much as the others.â
âWell, whoâd have thought it? You, another Garbo fan! And with hair like yours,â Rose marvelled. âI mean, I know itâs one of those music things, but does it really have to be that long?â
â Rose ,â hissed Jonathan. âHeâs our guest.â
âSoâs Rose,â Rennie said easily. âWhich means we can both say whatever we like. Now, weâve sprung ourselves on you, so would you let me take you all out to lunch, to make up for it?â
âWe can feed you!â Rose looked deeply offended; on the worktop behind her stood bowls of chopped carrots, potatoes and onions. âThereâs more than enough for everyone.â
Under his breath Jonathan murmured, âThereâs enough for everyone in Kilnachranan.â
âBut wouldnât lunch out be more of a treat for you? How about the Kincaid Hotel in Edinburgh?â said Rennie. âItâs supposed to be fantastic. We could make a proper afternoon of it.â
Jonathan said, âBit short notice. I wouldnât think youâd get a table.â
âOh, theyâll find one for me. Suzy Kincaidâs an old friend.â
Leaning against the worktop, Carmen wondered what it must be like to be Rennie, always able to do anything you wanted to do. In fairness, heâd been exactly the same before the band had known fame and fortune.
âThat sounds great then.â Clearing his throat, Jonathan said, âThe thing is, weâve been invited to a party this afternoon. Seems a bit rude to let your friends down because youâve had a better offer. Maybe I should give the lunch a miss.â
He sounded torn. Carmen guessed that, much as he wanted to be down at the party with all his friends, he was reluctant to pass up the opportunity to boast to them that he had been taken out to lunch by Rennie Todd. One thing was for sure, though. Jonathan really didnât want to miss out on this Boxing Day bash down at the Talbot Arms. Which was interesting, Carmen thought, and rather made you wonder why not.
âRight, better idea,â said Rennie. âWeâll have Roseâs casserole for lunch and book a table at Kincaidâs for dinner this evening. Then you lot can go to your party this afternoon.â He paused as if the thought had just occurred to him. âActually, would they mind if you brought along a couple of extra guests?â
âGreat. No problem. Of course you can come along.â Jonathan nodded vigorously and Rose let out a little exclamation of pleasure.
âOK with you, Miss Garbo?â Rennie turned to her to double-check. âYou donât mind if we gatecrash?â
âIâd be
