around and captured her raised finger in his hand.
âWere you just singing. . . Moondance? â Anna asked.
âSure was. Been stuck in my head all morning, figured Iâd put it to good use and practice my moves. Why?â
Anna shrugged. âUm, no reason.â
What are the chances of two people waking up with the same song in their head? And an old one at that.
âWell, now youâre here, why donât we practice our steps together?â
Anna held up her cardboard cup. âNot until Iâve had my fix.â
âSoy hot chocolate?â
Anna nodded.
âYou call that a fix? Chocolate only has minute amounts of caffeine. Try a coffee â thatâll have you dancing on the tables.â Charlie grinned.
âI donât think I want to dance on tables.â She grinned back.
âWhy not? Itâd be fun. You never know what somethingâs like till you try it.â
âIâll stick to my hot chocolate, and dancing on the floor , thank you very much.â Anna smiled, poking Charlie on the chest and taking a long sip of her drink. He raised his arms in defeat and resumed his Moondance rendition.
* * *
âYou coming?â Charlie asked several hours later.
âNot yet, Iâll hang around for a bit.â Anna hadnât spoken to Karl all day and was waiting for him to finish with the make-up artist in hope of catching him before he did his final scene for the day.
âOkay, see you tomorrow.â Charlie headed toward the elevator with Vera, who lived in the same apartment building as him.
She waved and shifted from one foot to the other, periodically glancing toward Karl until finally his make-up was complete. Fake blood spatters adorned his tanned face and doctorâs coat. Anna didnât know why they didnât just fling a cup-full of the red corn syrup at his face, would have saved half an hour and looked completely natural.
âLooking good, Doctor,â she teased as she approached Karl.
âPretty freaky, huh?â He moved a hand mirror about his face to survey the result.
Karl would have to do his scene soon, so there was no time to waste. âSo, are you free for dinner tonight?â She hitched her strap higher on her shoulder.
Karl grasped her hands in his. âActually Iâm not, sweetheart.â
Bummer.
âTomorrow night?â
âSure, tomorrow then.â Anna was pleased, but would have loved nothing more than to be with him tonight.
âItâs a date.â He smiled his sexy, irresistible smile.
The corners of Annaâs mouth lifted and she turned away slightly. âWell, Iâll see you tomorrow.â
âI canât wait,â he replied, a glint in his eye that held promises she longed to have fulfilled.
As she turned toward the elevator, she glanced back at Karl as the make-up artist came back to him. âIâm off now, but if the blood needs touching up during the scene, my apprentice will attend to it, okay?â the make-up artist said, placing her hand on his arm and giving it a brief but definite rub with her thumb.
Annaâs shoulders clenched and she crossed her arms.
âAnd. . .â the make-up artist continued, âIâm really looking forward to tonight.â She spoke into his ear, softly, but loud enough for Anna to hear.
Annaâs jaw opened. What?
Karl took the womanâs hand in his and kissed it. âIâm looking forward to it, too.â
The woman slithered off and passed Anna as though she was invisible, taking the elevator and leaving Anna rooted to the spot.
Karlâs eyes caught Annaâs as he stood from his make-up stool. âI thought you were off home,â he said.
Anna rubbed at the heat rising up the back of her neck. âSo, you and. . .â she pointed her thumb over her shoulder, âher. . .are going on a date , tonight?â
Karl nodded plainly. âThat a
