havenât had much time to discuss it yet.â
âDid you tell her about my monster-movie idea?â he asked eagerly.
Before I could answer, Gabe Campbell stomped past us. âOut of the way, freaks,â he said, purposelybumping Liam hard with one shoulder. He paused just long enough to glare at me. âEspecially you , superfreak!â
âOw,â Liam muttered, rubbing his arm as Gabe took off. âWhat was that all about?â
âWho knows?â I stared after Gabe. He was always calling me namesâCassie, tooâbut âsuperfreakâ was a new one.
Bianca glanced up from her book as Liam and I sat down. âHey, Caitlyn,â she said. âMs. Xavier was just here looking for you.â
âShe was?â I glanced around. âWhy?â
âDonât know,â Bianca replied. âBut here she comes again.â
Sure enough, the teacher was barreling toward us with a big smile on her face and her patchwork peasant skirt swishing around her legs. âCaitlyn!â she exclaimed breathlessly. âYou rushed out of class so fast that I didnât get a chance to touch base with you. Have you given any thought to my idea?â
âYour idea?â Iâd nearly forgotten our conversation the day before. âYou mean about the project?â
âYes, of course.â She leaned on the table, almost putting her hand down on Biancaâs sandwich. âI mentioned it to your twin, too, but she said sheâd have to speak to you about it. So what do you say? Are you two in?â
Out of the corner of my eye, I could see my friends trading perplexed looks. âIâve been so busy I havenât had a chance to think about it yet. Can I get back to you?â
âOf course. No pressure!â She laughed loudly, then patted me on the arm. âI just really think it could be . . . enlightening. Hmm? But yes, let me know what you decide after youâve discussed it with Cassie.â
âOkay.â
âWhat was that all about?â Bianca asked once the teacher had gone.
I sighed. âNothing. Just some idea she had about Cassie and me working together on the social studies project.â I filled them in on what Ms. Xavier had said. âWhatâs the deal with her, anyway?â I added. âShe seems almost obsessed with the whole twin thing.â
âSheâs interested in all kinds of weird stuff.â Liamshot me an apologetic look. âNot that being twins is weird.â
âItâs okay; I know what you mean.â I smiled at him. âSo what else is she into?â
He shrugged. âLots of things. Like last year she decided everyone would learn more if she hung crystals all over the room. Oh, and she was into aromatherapy for a while. She made the whole school smell like lavender for months.â
âThe principal stopped her from teaching a unit on voodoo, though,â Bianca put in. âThat was too much for Aura.â
âSheâs not from here,â Liam added. âShe married into Aura. Her husbandâs family has been here forever, but she lived in New Orleans before.â
I was already losing interest in Ms. Xavier. Whatever her obsession with twins, it was a little odd, but no biggie. Kind of cute, actually.
âIâll have to let her down easy on the twin project idea,â I said.
Liam took a sip of his water. âSo youâre not going to do it?â
âNo way. Itâs been hard enough to get Cassie to work with me on our birthday partyâdoing a social studies project with her would be a disaster!â I laughed. âAnyway, speaking of the party, Cass and I are supposed to figure out a plan tomorrow.â Suddenly I had a great idea. âHey, why donât you both come over? You can help us brainstorm.â
âSure, that sounds fun,â Liam agreed immediately.
âCool! Bianca? What about you?â Neither of my friends
