front of a boy Iâve just met. Even if Iââ The look on Joshuaâs face made her stop midsentence. âI mean, I canâtââ
âHardly know me? Becky Lee, whatâs gotten into you? Weâve known each other since we was babies.â
âWell, sure we have, itâs just thatâWell, youâve never seen me...?â
âSeen you what?â Joshua looked into Allisonâs eyes, and she turned away, blushing. âNo, of course not! It ainât proper. I wasnât suggesting we walk around neck-ed. Look!â
Joshua ran to the waterfall and vanished behind it. A few seconds later, he returned carrying two rolled-up blankets.
âBlankets! Wow, whereâd youâ?â Allison stopped before she made yet another blunder. âI mean, this is great. We can get undressed and wrap up in blankets.â
âAnd eat.â Joshua drew a knife from his pocket. âGo into the trees and get undressed while I gut the fish. Iâll get them roasting.â
By the time Allison returned, wearing the blanket like a sarong wrapped under her armpits and carrying her wet clothes, Joshua had already spread out his clothes to dry. His blanket was wrapped around his waist like a skirt, and he was kneeling in front of the fire, hanging the gutted fish on thin green branches above the flames. He had propped open the sides of the fish with short sticks.
Feeling self-conscious again, Allison tiptoed to the fire and spread out the calico dress, bloomers, and camisole on soft pine needles. When she was done, she knelt in front of Joshua.
âAnything I can do?â
âNo, Iâm just about done,â he said, hanging the fourth fish on a branch above the fire and poking the other end of the stick into the ground. âJust settle in. The fish donât take but a fewââ Joshua looked up and his eyes opened wide. He stared at Allisonâs bruised shoulder and arm. âBecky Lee, what on Earth?â
He was at her side in an instant. âIt was
her,
wasnât it?â Joshua examined the bruised arm. His touch was butterfly soft. When he looked back up, his eyes had lost their laughter.
âWasnât it?â he insisted.
Allison shrugged her good shoulder. âIâm not sure ... I guess so.â
âWhat do you mean, youâre not sure? You couldnât have slept through a beating like this.â
âI just donât know.â Allison turned away. How could she explain?
Joshuaâs eyes narrowed. âYou been having any more of them spells you was telling me about?â
âSpells?â
âYou donât have to be afraid to tell me, Becky. Anyway, I know it was your mama. Itâs always your mama.â Joshua continued to stare at her arm as if the mere act of looking could mend it. âCan you lift it?â
Allison lifted the arm and winced. âBut itâs not as bad as it was this morning. I doubt itâs sprained. Just bruised.â
âI swear, Becky LeeââJoshuaâs voice quiveredââif Sadie Thompson hurts you once more, Iâll kill her. I swear I will.â
Allison shivered. âDonât say that! Anyway, sheâll never have another chance to touch me.â
âNow what are you talking about? Why wonât she?â
âBecauseââAllison turned and looked into Joshuaâs eyesââIâm never going back there, thatâs why.â
Chapter 8
Allison leaned against a boulder and licked her greasy fingers. âThat had to be the best fish Iâve ever eaten.â
Joshua chuckled. âYou always say that.â
âOh ... I guess I wouldâI mean doâI guess I do.â
Joshua gave her a strange look and shook his head. âYou were late again, today. Didnât think youâd make it.â
âYou were waiting for me?â
So I did do what Becky was supposed to do.
âWe always meet
