continued to fire more. Each time wagging her finger at me, demanding answers “Furthermore, why are you barricading the stairs? Are you keeping us as prisoners? What makes you the leader?”
“Lisa, enough, let the man answer.” Kevin interrupted her tirade. She immediately scowled at Kevin, looking like she was about to explode.
“Lisa, to answer your questions, nothing qualifies me as an EMT or doctor. But I can tell you, no one can survive long, after having their intestines ripped out of their body. And if not, do we have a trauma first aid kit and experience to fix them? How about we call 911? Oh wait all communications are down. I moved her body so all of us didn’t have to see her and to give her the privacy she deserves. Now for Marco, I checked for a pulse and could not discern one. I also checked his eyes and they were filled with blood and I also checked for breath which I could not find. For the door being barred, well from what we saw and the screams we heard, it was the only option left to us. After we moved Stacey’s body, something attacked the door and seemed to want to get in badly and I am not going to allow anyone else to be harmed.” I answered all of Lisa’s questions but she did not seem to like my answers. Her glare was enough to tell me she wasn’t having any of it.
Brian cleared his throat and stepped into the glare of death coming from Lisa. “Ma’am I served one tour in Iraq and one in Afghanistan with the 26 th Marine Expeditionary Unit, which means I saw battle and took fire. I have seen men dying and dead with wounds that looked nicer then Stacey’s. I have forced the guts of my friends back into their bellies, while trying to get them medical attention. Unfortunately, I lost more than I was able to save. So you ask if anyone was qualified to assess Stacey or Marco's wounds, I have to say yes, my experience is more than enough. We could not have saved either one, even if I had a combat medic available to help. Again I have seen things that would give you nightmares for years and with what is in that stairway, I would not open it and face it or allow anyone here to face it. So ma’am, why don’t you calm down. Dan here has been doing a fine job trying to keep us safe, fed and organized.”
Lisa didn’t look like she even cared or heard what Brian said but did sit down on her chair and cross her legs and looked away like she was trying to control a tantrum. “Thank you Brian, I appreciate your help and I’m afraid we will need more of it till we get rescued. Now anyone else have something to offer or ask?”
A balding over weight man with a bad comb over raised his hand into the air, as I could recall I thought his name was Gilbert. I nodded at him to take the floor. He stood up from where he had been sitting. “Dan, I know things have been bad today and I know you are trying to do your best to lead us and I appreciate it. But do we have any ideas about what’s going on or maybe a plan to get us out of here? I have two kids and a wife at home waiting for me. I need to get home.” His upper lip was sweating badly and he looked very pale.
“I have no idea what’s going on out there. I’m as lost as you, but be assured I am keeping nothing from you guys. Again it looks like Marco had the flu and died from it just like the news said was happening on the east coast. Things are bad over there and I do not want this to happen here. I don’t even know if what happened to Stacey or the people in the stairway are related. My plan is for us to eat, sit tight tonight, and hope for someone to come to our rescue. We have no way to protect ourselves and I am not sending anyone out to the stairs after what happened.” I was getting tired of repeating the facts.
Everyone seemed to shrink back and closed off from questioning. “Why don’t we all line up and get us something to eat? Maybe it will help us relax and think of a way out of our predicament.” I noticed Matt had moved
