fear that this baby might be his somehow, he forced himself to continue reading.
“You seem like a man I can trust. I beg you for your help in keeping my daughter Lola safe. I will come for her when I can. Until then please do not report anything to the police or they will take her from me. Please. Keeping her a secret is more important than I can say, for reasons I can’t tell you. The things she will need are in the bags I am leaving with her. I owe you my life and hers. Isabel.”
Rocky glanced up to find the room full of stunned people watching him.
“Shit.” Rick shook his head. “I have so many questions I don’t know where to start.”
“Then I’ll start. Was there a bag outside?” Jon asked Darci.
“I don’t know. I was so shocked by the baby, I didn’t notice. I just grabbed the handle and carried her in.”
“I’ll go check.” Jon moved toward the front door as Rocky began to feel a little unsteady on his feet.
He glanced at the baby, wrapped in a pink blanket and still in Ali’s arms.
What the hell was he going to do with a baby? And how long was Isabel going to take to retrieve her?
Hours? Days? Any longer and this was going to be a big problem.
For one thing, he could get recalled on an hour’s notice. But more than that, he wasn’t allowed to have any overnight visitors in the barracks. Not guys. Not girls. And certainly not a three-month old baby who would make her presence known with every unhappy yowl.
“I can’t bring her back to the barracks. And I don’t know shit about babies.” Rocky looked at Thom. “You’re going to have to take her.”
“Me? What the fuck am I supposed to do with her? I’m in the barracks just like you are.”
“Relax. Rocky, you can stay here with her until we figure this thing out.”
He raised his eyes to Darci at her kind offer. “Really? That’d be okay?”
“Of course. Just don’t expect me to take care of her. I don’t know anything about babies either.”
Rocky shifted his gaze to Thom, hoping his helpless expression would sway the man. “Will you stay with me?”
“I guess. If that’s all right.” Thom glanced at Darci and Rick.
“Sure.” Rick nodded. “We’ll figure something out. Wouldn’t be the first time you crashed on my sofa.”
“I can sleep at Chris’s place and Rocky and Thom can have my room. You two and Rick, on babysitting duty.” Darci shook her head. “Kind of sorry I won’t be here to see it.”
    “Me too.” Sierra smiled.
“You’re not staying here with us?” Rick’s eyes widened.
“I have a suite at the Ritz, so no.” Sierra looked every bit the diva as Rick pouted and Rocky’s head spun.
He and Thom and the baby, bunking together in Darci’s room in Rick’s house. The situation got weirder by the moment.
“Maybe this Isabel will be back soon and no one will have to stay,” Ali offered.
Jon returned to the dining room and dumped an overstuffed bag onto the table. In his other hand he held a plastic bag that was leaking water onto the carpet.
“Judging by the amount of stuff she packed for the kid she’s not planning to be back today.” He turned toward the kitchen, catching the dripping liquid from the bag in his hand. “There are four bottles in here. Thom, how long before we run out of stuff to feed her?”
Thom’s eyes widened. “It’s been a long time since my kids were that age. And to be honest, I was away for a lot of that time. Probably why I’m divorced today but still, I’m sorry but I’m not really sure.”
“We’ll search on the internet about what she’s supposed to be eating and then go out and buy what we need when we run out.” Darci was already opening a laptop she’d grabbed from somewhere.
Rocky was in a daze of shock but clarity was starting to take over again. There was something productive he could do, and it entailed more than researching feeding a baby.
He stood. “I know she left this baby for me, but if somebody could just watch
