brush. “You think you’re going to do my hair?” I gave him a surprised look in the mirror.
“It won’t be anything fancy, but I’m confident I can handle it.” Cage carefully ran the bristles through my tangles. Then he pulled the front ends of my hair back, and secured them with a silver barrette.
“What do you think?” he asked, when I peered at myself in the mirror.
Shocked, I said, “You did good.” I turned and kissed him. “You’re amazing.” I straightened his tie. “In more ways than one.”
“So are you.” Cage took my hand and walked me to the front door. “Let’s go get Birdy.”

    CHAPTER 10
    Katie

At th e police station I got out of the limo first. I couldn’t wait. I was too excited. Cage came up behind me. “I just got off the phone. They’re sending her out right now.”
The sun was setting, sending rays of fading light bouncing against the windows of the buildings on both sides of the street. I used my good hand to shield my eyes. Someone shouted, “Pig.” I didn’t bother turning to look at the obnoxious man. I was focused on the front doors of the police station. Birdy would be walking through those doors any moment.
    They opened.
Birdy walked out. She had a big smile on her face and the usual bounce in her step. “Katie! Is that you?” Birdy shouted, waving. She still looked like her. Even with jail soap and shampoo. Like a model. The bitch.
My smile got so big it nearly broke my face. “Birdy!” I ran forward, excited to get my arms around her and hug her tightly.
When I was within a few feet I heard a weird whistling sound and then a thud. Birdy went flying backward and landed in a crumpled heap on the concrete pavement.
I screamed. “Birdy.” I ran over and fell to my knees.
Blood oozed from a hole in her forehead, directly between the eyes.
“Katie,” Birdy said, her voice so soft it was hard to hear. Blood gurgled from her mouth.
I took off my powder blue scarf, wiped the blood and then held it to her bleeding head. “You’re going to be fine,” I said even though it felt like a lie. Tears blurred my vision and I bit my lip to hold back the need to sob.
Why was this happening? First Chloe nearly killed me, then someone shot Griffin and he was in a coma, and now Birdy? Were the events related? It was obvious in my mind that they were. I needed to find the connection.
    “It’s… good… to…” Birdy’s eyes closed.
“Birdy. Open your eyes. Come on.” I gently patted her cheek. “I need you. You can’t leave me. Who’s going to keep me socially acceptable?”
She opened her eyes. Pain radiated from them. “I’m sorry, Katie. I didn’t tell you… about… dad.”
I leaned down, pressing my cheek against hers. “I always believed you were my sister, even before I saw the birth certificate.” I smiled, peering at her face. Now that I knew she and I were half sisters, I could see similarities. The slope of our noses and… nope that was about it.
Birdy smiled back. Tears leaked from her eyes. “I think I know…” She swallowed.
In the background I heard shouting, and realized Cage was on the phone, but ignored them. “What Birdy? What do you know?”
“Who killed Reid,” she finished, her voice raspy.
“Shhh, don’t worry about it. We can talk later.” I sniffled and wiped away my tears. I needed to be strong.
Birdy tried to shake her head as she mouthed something. I bent closer. “Say again.”
    “Pocket,” she whispered.
I sat up to check her pockets, but there were suddenly a slew of police officers, EMT’s, and plain-clothes people surrounding Birdy and I. I threw my body over hers. I’d just got her back. She couldn’t leave me again.
    “Don’t touch her,” I shouted.
