took the idea of a home being a castle a bit too far,â Cole said.
Prue batted her eyes at him innocently. âWhat? You donât like turrets? Turrets are awesome.â
âDonât you think this place is a bit big for the two of us?â Cole asked. âI get that it wasnât your choice to have me move in here, but do you really need to keep a dozen rooms between us on multiple floors?â
Prue checked out what she could see of the exterior from the balcony. Maybe she had gone a little overboard, but there didnât seem to be any reason to hold back. âI have a big family. With a place like this, theyâll always feel welcome.â
âAnd theyâll always feel like royalty,â Cole said.
Prue gave him a playful swat on the arm. âWhy are you complaining? Now youâve got more places to hide. Where
have
you been today?â
Cole sat in one of the newly created chairs on the balcony to take in the rest of the sunset. âJust reading up on all the news that I missed while I was away.â
âWhat a nice euphemism for
dead,
â Prue said, with a little more harshness than sheâd intended. âAnd donât act like you werenât keeping watch on the world while you were wherever it was you were. You know whatâs going on in the world. Youâre just avoiding my sisters. Or a certain sister in particular.â
âI figured itâs probably better that way,â Cole said. âThat particular sister is married now, a mother. She doesnât need me complicating her life.â
Prue took the seat beside him. âGuess she doesnât need me complicating it either. Iâve seen Paige more than Phoebe since Iâve been back.â
âSheâs another one that Iâd like to avoid,â Cole said. âI was never top of Paigeâs list before.â
âCole, that was another lifetime ago,â Prue said. âLiterally. Theyâve moved on.
Weâve
moved on.â
Cole coughed discreetly.
âOkay,â Prue said. âBad choice of words. But you know what I mean. If weâre going to be in this together, weâve got to be together. No more hiding.â
âFine,â Cole said. âDid you want me to go after them and see if I can help?â
âTheyâve been getting along fine without us for a while now. Theyâll let us know when they need us.â
The pair sat in silence for a moment as the sun dipped below the horizon.
Cole leaned over to Prue. âYou have any board games in this place?â
Chapter 5
Thousands of tiny orbs dropped through the air to form the bodies of the Charmed Ones in an empty alleyway in Hartford, Connecticut. Once again, Phoebe was impressed by the way that Paigeâs Whitelighter abilities exhibited themselves. The three of them could have popped up in a crowd or the middle of a busy street. One ill-placed orb in front of a bus could end the mission of the Charmed Ones and their lives. Thankfully, Prueâs magic tattoo must have also taken that into account, placing them in a destination where they wouldnât freak anyone out or risk certain death.
âAre we here?â Phoebe asked. âHartford?â
âWeâll know in a second.â Paige led them out of the alleyway onto a quaint little street in a mom-and-pop type of shopping district. All the signs were hand painted and the windows showed a wide range of items, from hardware to boutique-style clothing. âThe vision I saw when I touched Prueâs tattoo showed some kind of computer repair shop with a cutesy name.â
âTech Bytes?â Piper pointed to a sign a couple of doors down from the alley. Beneath the name, there was a crudely rendered painting of a laptop that looked like it was chomping on a row of numbers that were likely the address.
âThat would be the place.â Paige continued in the lead, moving down the street. She tried the
