kidding. But I do have to go back in. Why don’t you take that cab over there?” Gavin indicated the taxi that was pulling over at the front of the hotel to offload three people.
“Oh, good. I thought I’d have to call for one.”
“Come on, before someone else gets it.” Gavin took her hand to lead her to the taxi, only for him to drop it almost immediately. “Go ahead. I’ll talk to you later.”
She glanced at him sharply, surprised at the sudden brusqueness of his tone. But Gavin was already walking away from her and was approaching a man with spiked blond hair having a smoke. The guy—he had to be working at the hotel’s restaurant or the bar, judging from his uniform—smiled at Gavin before his interested gaze flickered back to her.
She averted her eyes and waved to get the taxi driver’s attention. If the hotel employee was involved in whatever Gavin was working on, she’d better leave them to it.
She settled herself inside the cab and gave the driver her home address, then pulled out her phone to check for messages. There was one from Marilyn asking if she’d “done it”. Grinning, she called her friend back.
“Since the night is still young and you’re already calling me,” Marilyn said without preamble, “I take it you’ve told Leo the bad news.”
“Yup,” she answered with a chuckle.
“You don’t sound stressed, so I guess Leo took it well?”
“Actually, he didn’t. First, he couldn’t believe I was breaking up with him during our third-month anniversary dinner. Mind you, I did tell him we needed to talk as soon as we walked out of my office, and he did know from my serious tone what was coming. But he asked that we discuss it at the restaurant, even after I’d insisted it wouldn’t be good news. Unfortunately, he decided to get drunk during dinner. When I said that our relationship wasn’t working for me and that he deserved to be with someone who would return his feelings, he started to get creepy.”
“Creepy?”
“Yeah. He simply wouldn’t take no for an answer. He kept insisting we could work it out and pleaded with me to give him another month to prove how much I mean to him. Even when I’d had it and left the restaurant, he kept on trying to hold my hand or arm. He even tried to hug me a few times.”
“Gosh. That was creepy. So how did you finally get rid of him?”
“Gavin rescued me,” she said, almost swooning at the memory.
“ Gavin rescued you? ”
“Yes.” She told Marilyn about Gavin’s unexpected but timely appearance.
There was silence at the other end.
“Hey, are you still there?”
“Yes. I just had to pick up my jaw from the floor.”
She laughed.
“Honestly, Tash, from the way you told that story, you’re obviously thrilled that Gavin was your knight in shining armour.”
“I know, right?” she said with a loud sigh.
“Natasha! Are you having a thing for Gavin again?”
“What? What do you mean again ? Who told you?”
“Uh, Cassie happened to mention in passing during Brad and Erin’s party that you and Gavin were an item five years ago.”
She gasped, hope and glee mixing with disbelief. “I can’t believe she went through with it.”
“Went through with what?”
“You’re joining us at Lexie’s on Sunday morning for a girls-only brunch, right?”
“Yes.”
“Good. I’ll tell you all about it then.”
“Oh my gosh. I’m going to have to wait again,” Marilyn complained.
“Patience, my dear Marilyn,” she said with a laugh.
“Hope you’re not mad at Cassie.”
“Not at all,” she said, aware of the big grin on her face. “Because it means she thinks Gavin has feelings for me.”

N atasha rang Lexie and Rick’s doorbell, holding the box of carrot cake she’d made for their girls-only brunch. Cassie opened the door, greeting her with a hug and a kiss.
“Is everyone here already?” she asked, squeezing Cassie tight.
“Yup.”
“Oh, good. We can start talking about
