me,â said Kristyâs mother.
âWho?â asked Kristy suspiciously.
âCome in the kitchen.â
Sitting at the kitchen table was Jamie Newton. He was drinking milk and coloring in a coloring book.
âJamie!â cried Kristy. âHi!â
âHi there, Jamie,â I said.
âHi-hi,â answered Jamie cheerfully.
âWhat are you doing here?â Kristy asked him.
Jamie glanced at Kristyâs mother.
âGo ahead and tell them your news, sweetie,â said Mrs. Thomas.
âMy mommyâs having a baby,â he announced. âSheâs at the hospital.â
âHaving the baby?
Now?â
asked Kristy, sounding dismayed.
âKristy, I know you girls had plans for helping the Newtons out,â her mother said, âbut the baby started to come late this morning. Several weeks ago, the Newtons had asked me whether Iâd be able to watch Jamie if the baby arrived at night or while you girls were in school. I told them Iâd be glad to. When Mr. Newton called me at work to say that it was time for him to take his wife to the hospital, I told him just to drop Jamie by my office on the way.â
âOn the way!â said Kristy. âBut you work in Stamford.â
âI know. The Newtonsâ doctor is with the Stamford hospital, though, so I really was on their way. Jamie worked very hard with me today, didnât you, Jamie?â
Jamie nodded proudly.
âHe made a picture for the baby and read some books and copied things on the Xerox machine.â
âAnd we had lunch together,â added Jamie.
âThatâs right,â said Mrs. Thomas. âWe ate in the cafeteria.â She looked at her watch. âAnd now, girls,â she said. âIâm leaving Jamie in your capable hands and going back to the office for a few hours.â
I got the distinct impression that Mrs. Thomas hadnât gotten much work done that day.
âBut, Mom, wait! What about the baby?â asked Kristy. âDonât leave us hanging!â
âYeah!â I exclaimed. âWhat did Mrs. Newton have?â
âSorry, no word yet. Mr. Newton promised heâd phone as soon as the baby is born. He knows to call here after three oâclock.â
âWell, how long does it take?â asked Kristy indignantly. âI mean, to have a baby?â
Her mother smiled. âIt depends on the baby. You took twenty-four hours.â
âWow,â I said.
âTwenty-four hours!â
cried Kristy. âOh, no. I cannot wait that long.â
âWell, maybe this baby will come faster. Now listen, Jamieâs going to stay with us until his father comes home from the hospital. Since he may be spending the night, why donât you gethis pajamas and things, but stay around here the rest of the time. Itâll be easier for Jamie than going back and forth. Hereâs the key to the Newtonsâ house. Iâll pay you for sitting this afternoon, by the way. And Iâll be home by six-thirty.â Mrs. Thomas kissed Kristy good-bye and waved to Jamie and me. Then she was gone.
âWell, this isnât exactly the way Iâd thought things would work out,â said Kristy, âbut it
is
a pretty exciting afternoon.â
âIâll say! ⦠Hey, where are your brothers?â
âYou mean Sam?â teased Kristy.
âWe-ell â¦â
âLetâs see. Todayâs Monday so itâs Charlieâs day to watch David Michael. Oh, I bet he met David Michael at school and took him back to Stoneybrook High to watch cheerleading practice. Samâs probably with them.â
âCheerleading practice?â
âYeah. David Michael loves it. He comes home
and shows us the cheers.â
I giggled.
âSo, Jamie,â said Kristy. âWhat do you think? Youâre going to be a big brother pretty soon.â
Jamie shrugged and continued coloring.
âWhat do you want?â I
