never change,â Clyde said, an edge to his voice. âYou preachinâ to me about how not to ruin my life.â
âYouâre missing the point,â insisted Trey. âI care about you, Clyde, and just want to make sure you have a fair shot at getting a life that doesnât include violence and property crime. Is that really so wrong? Or should I just keep my mouth shut like a good brother and not tell you what I think?â
Clyde breathed out his nose. âItâs not wrong. I know youâre just trying to help. Believe me, I have no desire to get back with the âwrong crowd,â as you put it. I had a lot of time to think in the pen. I know I donât have many chances left to do it right and I donât plan to blow it this time around. Thereâs definitely something out there with my name on it that doesnât include turning back to a life of crime.â
Trey nodded, pleased. âWell thatâs good to hear.â Maybe he was finally beginning to reach him after all these years.
âI mean it,â Clyde reiterated, his features softening.
âItâs still there, isnât it?â Trey asked intuitively.
âWhatâs that?â
âThat infamous Clyde Lancaster temper.â
Clyde cracked a half grin. âI suppose so. But Iâm different now. I know how to control it, channel in a positive direction.â
Trey hoped that were true for his sake âThen you have changed.â
âI think we both have.â
âYouâre probably right about that.â Trey decided this was as good a time as any to spring his next surprise on Clyde. âIâve got something for you.â
âOh, yeah?â Clyde met his gaze curiously.
âYeah. Follow me . . .â
Trey led them through the twists and turns of the house to the front door, opening it. Both men stepped outside.
Clyde spied the shiny, sapphire-metallic BMW. âWhatâs this?â
âItâs yours,â Trey said, pulling the keys from his pocket and putting them in Clydeâs hand. âI had someone from the dealership drop it off this morning. Itâs a 650i Coupe thatâs got just a few miles on it.â
Clyde shook his head. âYou donât have to do this, man.â
âI want to,â stressed Trey. âYou need some wheels to get around, and I can afford to supply you with them. Seems like the perfect marriage to me.â
Clyde was speechless. âNot sure what to say.â
âDonât say anything other than youâll take good care of it.â
Clyde showed his teeth. âYeah, Iâll definitely do that.â
Trey chuckled. âAnd while youâre at it, youâll probably be needing this, too.â He took an iPhone out of his pocket. âItâs got all the fancy stuff youâve been missing. The instruction booklet is in the car if you need help figuring things out. The cell phone has our home phone, my office, and my own cell numbers.â He handed it to Clyde. âNow you should be all set to get back on your feet.â
Clyde made a face. âYou know, though weâve had our issues, itâs getting really hard not to like you, big brother.â
âI think itâs time we started liking each other, little brother,â Trey countered, and meant every word. Both were in their thirties now and needed to respect the other for their differences, even if it might still be challenging at times. âNow why donât you give the car a spin?â
âGood idea.â
âGot a full tank of gas, so break her in like a thoroughbred.â
âIâll give it my best shot,â Clyde promised.
Clyde was about to hop inside the car when he looked up and saw Ivana peering from a bedroom window. From the start, heâd sensed there was some sort of connection between them. Or was it more his imagination? Or wishful thinking? Their eyes met for a long moment
