me.â
âI should have been more honest. Iâm sorry. I was just helping the detective.â
âBrian killed my mother.â
âI know. All the evidence points to him.â
âThen why are you still asking questions?â
âIâm done as of today.â
Jasonâs shoulders relaxed. âGood because I want Brian to pay for what he did.â
âOh, Iâd say heâs paying already.â
Jason nodded. âYou know when you asked me where my father lives and I said Wisconsin? Well, I meant New York. I get confused.â
âThatâs okay. Geography isnât my strong suit either.â If a girl needed to roll over and play dead, I could give lessons.
âOkay, well, I just wanted you to know that you shouldnât be tricking people. Some of us donât like it. We might have to stop you.â
âConsider me stopped. It was wrong of me to act like I was friends with your mom.â
Jason started to back away. He looked confused. Heâd probably been expecting more of a fight. âOkay,â he said. âI guess Iâll see you around thenâ¦or not.â He cocked his hand at me like he was firing a gun. âJust so long as you leave me alone.â
âYou can count on it.â
He turned and started walking away from me. I held a hand up to cover my wildly thumping heart. I watched him until he was gone from sight.
âGot you worried, Jason?â I whispered. âIt seems that Iâm making you sweat. Now whatâs that all about?â
I turned and started walking toward my car. Tomorrow I would track down the last few people I needed to talk to. Iâd start with the doctorsâ office where Marjory last worked. I needed to find out if she was having an affair with one of them. I would follow every lead to the end. I knew I was getting close. But I was still a long way from bringing the killer to Cal on a platter.
CHAPTER FOURTEEN
D octors Anders, Neil and Carlson had a booming practice, judging by the number of people in the waiting room. It was eight am, and I thought Iâd beat the morning rush. I was wrong.
I walked up to the woman behind the glass divider and waited until she got off the phone. She was late forties with curly black hair and coffee-colored skin. Her eyes said smart and no-nonsense.
âWhich doctor are you here to see?â she asked.
âIâm not sure. Iâm here to make an appointment.â
âIâm sorry, but none of the doctors is taking on new patients at this time.â
âBut I was told that one was. I just forget his name.â
âWell, we have two male doctors on staff. Dr. Anders and Dr. Carlson.â
âMarjory said the doctor I should ask for had four kids.â
âMarjory?â
âMarjory White. She told me to mention her name.â I stole a look at her name tag. âShe said that Pam would be able to help me out.â
âWell, Iâm Pam. I guess you havenât heard. Marjory White died a few months ago. I hope you werenât too close.â There was no sadness in her voice.
âOh my god! This is such a shock. I just knew her from the gym. I wondered why sheâd stopped coming. She told me that she liked working here.â It was scary how easily Iâd taken to lying. It was like a hidden talent.
If a face could snort without snorting, Pam somehow managed it. âIâll bet she liked it here. I was as surprised as anyone when she took another job.â Pam leaned closer. âDr. Carlson is the one with four kids. She chased him like a dog in heat. She was always staying late, trying to cozy up to him. It made me sick.â
âDid Dr. Carlson fall for her?â
âAt first Iâd say he wasâ¦flattered. Marjory was good at roping them in. Iâll say that for her. He seemed to like the attention for a while. Then he found it disturbing. He told me after she left that he was
