like James Bond accepting a mission. This training session was going to be unlike any other, sheâd told herself as she marched inside. Gone were the days of being a klutz. She was going to be the best, most agile agent there ever was.
âWeâre ready,â she announced to Alex. âWhere do we begin?â
Alex launched into the eveningâs schedule, but despite Maxâs resolve, this training session turned out to be worse than all the others.
The last task was to outwit the Intruder Robot but after the tenth attempt, Max ended up scrunched in its arms, squirming like a piece of live bait.
âOkay, Max. That'll do.â Alex hit the remote and the robot dropped her to the floor.
âOooph!â Max looked up at the robot. âMaybe you could be a bit gentler next time, you hunk of technology?â
Max picked herself up while Alex finished her notes and packed her bag without a word.
âI guess that means we can go,â whispered Linden.
When they were outside, Max stopped. âI forgot something,â she said as she turned back towards the doors.
Linden sensed this could mean trouble. âMax?â
âHmmm?â she mumbled innocently.
âTry not to upset her.â
âWho said anything about upsetting her?â
Linden sighed as she turned on her heels and went inside. âJust a hunch.â
Max stopped abruptly in front of Alex.
âYes?â
She took a deep breath. âI think youâre being really unfair and way too hard on me considering this is my first week of training and anyone can see Iâm trying as hard as I can to do everything you want me to but for some reason you donât want to see that.â
Alex studied Max as though she was a bug under a magnifying glass. Maxâs heart thumped and her throat seized up. Maybe sheâd gone too far. Maybe Alex would refuse to train them. Maybe her big mouth had really blown it this time.
Alex said in a voice so quiet Max had to lean in to hear it, âIf you want an easy ride here then you should quit now. Spyforce isnât a holiday resort, itâs an intelligence agency for fighting crime.â
She said it like she was speaking to a small child and if there was one thing Max hated, it was being spoken to like a kid. She gritted her teeth and felt her anger grow inside her, splitting imaginary clothes like the Incredible Hulk in a bad mood.
What Max wanted to say was this: âI can do anything you or Spyforce ask me to do, but what Iâm really sick of is your big-headed attitude that makes me feel like Iâm the biggest failure who ever lived and who will never be able to do even the simplest spy work when, in case youâve forgotten, Iâve saved the world twice.â
Max felt good until she realised sheâd only said it in her head and Alex was still looking at her expectantly. âIs there something else youâd like to say, Max?â
She struggled to make her lips move, suddenly not feeling as brave as she had.
âYouâll never get anywhere in this world without finding things a little hard sometimes.â
Max tried to think of something to say, but came up with zero.
âNow have a good nightâs sleep and Iâll see you tomorrow.â
There was nothing else for Max to do but walk outside to where Linden was waiting.
âAre we in for it? Because I donât think my body can take anymore perfecting,â Linden joked, flexing his muscles.
Max didnât answer.
âItâs okay, Max. Youâll get it.â
âI know I will. I just wish she wasnât so mean.â She was only just holding back a sloosh of tears.
âI guess being gushy isnât her style.â
Max looked up and smiled, but as she did, she saw someone across the street staring straight at her.
âHey. I think Iâve seen that guy before.â
âWhich guy?â
A bus pulled up on the opposite side of the street
