The Marriage Clause
smiled. “Yeah it does, see you later.”
She knew exactly how to get to his apartment and drove the route to where base housing began.  Rows of two-story houses lined the streets, and each had two apartments in each. They weren’t the biggest and hosted very small front yards, if any at all. India parked in one of the spots closest to Mikael’s apartment and took her purse and the folder from the doctor out of the car before locking it.  She looked up and saw a person waiting by Mikael’s door. India frowned. It was Celeste and she was not looking pleased. Her blond hair was pinned up neatly and she was wearing a dark blue business suit. This isn’t going to be pretty, India thought with a sigh as she walked towards Mikael’s door.
“Well, if it isn’t Little Mary Sunshine and her goody two shoes.” Celeste words were sweet but her voice was laced with venom.
“If isn’t the wicked witch of the west,” India countered.
“Mikael isn’t here, so you can just go on home,” Celeste snapped.
“I know, I just left his office,” India said. ‘I’m sure you’re not supposed to be waiting here, so why don’t you run along like a good conniving bitch.”
“I see he told you about our little tiff, and I guess Brownie knows,” Celeste said. “You should talk to him and tell him he’s being difficult.”
India laughed incredulously. “I will do no such thing, and its Mrs. Nolan to you. Only you could think someone finding out you’re a gold digger as being only a tiff.”
India tried to juggle her purse and get the keys out. She accidentally dropped the folder and the sonogram pictures spilled. Before she could get them all Celeste snatched one from the cement and looked at it.
“Someone got you pregnant. Who actually laid with your dwarflike body?” She laughed. India said nothing and raised one eyebrow until understanding bloomed on her face. “This is Mikael’s baby, you’re sleeping with him, he’s cheating on me?”
“To be clear, cheating means you’d have to be in a relationship,” India pointed out.
“You sneaky little bitch, you got him to fuck you and got yourself in good, huh?” Celeste sneered. “You think that your short, plump little body will keep him. You think just because Brownie likes you that he won’t come back to me looking for what’s good?”
India felt her temper start to simmer. “I don’t think so. I recall him saying he’d rather slap his dick with a rock before he’d be between your cold legs again. I think he called you frigid as the Arctic Circle.” Mikael had never said that, but she had the pleasure of seeing Celeste’s face turned red at the insult. “Leave before I call the MPs to come escort you off base.”
“You two think you are so smart, but trust me I’ll get you both back, and his grandmother or her money can’t save him,” Celeste threatened.
“I doubt he’ll be too concerned, I’m certainly not.” India unlocked Mikael’s door. “Get on your broom and fly witch, have a good one.”
India closed the door without waiting to see if she would leave or not. She was never threatened or scared of Celeste. From the time Mikael brought her to dinner Brownie caught on to the catty conniving woman she was, and India knew it was only a matter of time before he did too.  She wasn’t a concern and soon India had put the incident out of her mind. She’d ordered the Chinese food so it would be hot by the time Mikael came in and entertained herself with TV until he got home. When he opened the door it was dark outside even though it was only a little after six. She couldn’t wait for the longer days to start in March when daylight savings time returned.
“How was your day?” India asked.
“Paperwork and more paperwork, we’ve got annual training coming up,” Mikael answered. He bent over to kiss her on the couch. “Look at us sounding all homey.”
“Sit and see what I have,” she said excitedly and took the folder off the
