âweâll have no trouble finding a shaft of sunlight from tomorrow.â
âI hope we can start today,â said Milly longingly.
Jason nodded. â I hope this kiln place works out okay for Fenella.â
âWhere is she?â Milly wondered. Theyâd left their new friend to make her own way out of the den window.âPerhaps sheâs turned invisible?â
The phoenix suddenly flapped into view. She landed heavily in a tree, sending two plump woodpigeons clattering from its branches. âSorry, lovies!â she called after them.
âOr perhaps not,â said Michael.
âOh, but I will be invisible, my little goslings,â Fenella called. âTo anyone but you. Come on, then, lead the way!â
Jess looked at Milly. âYou do remember the way to Mr. Miltonâs, donât you?â
âI went in the car with Ann last time,â Milly recalled, âbut I think if we go up the road away from town and then cut through the churchyard and out along the footpath that should get us there.â
They set off, Fenella flying above them, her egg held in her feet, belting out a song about an oak tree.
âI love singing too!â Milly called. âIâm hoping to be the star of a show. Only a local oneâ¦â
âMilly, shhh!â Jess looked around anxiously. It was hard to believe that passersby wouldnât notice the big, golden turkey-shaped bird flapping along, singing at the top of her lungs. âMichael,â she whispered, lagging behind Jason and Milly. âYou do think Fenellaâs invisibility charm is working, donât you? I mean, sheâs a bit scatty, isnât she? What if sheâs got it wrong?â
âGuess we wonât know until someone else comes along,â said Michael grimly. A gang of boys bustled into view around the corner of the street ahead of them. âLook, we can test itâ¦oh, no!â He broke off, stumbling to a halt and looking horrified. âNo, please, no!â
Jess caught her breath. The people coming down the hill were Michaelâs friends Josh, Sam, and Thomasâand with them was the new boy-heartthrob, Rick. He was laughing with Sam and slapping Thomas on the back.
âThis is a disaster!â Michael hissed.
âDonât be daft, Michaelâmy magicâs still working.â Fenella swooped merrily down straight toward the gang of boys, and not one of them so much as blinked. She flew back up to the nearest tree. âTa-daaa!â
Jess smiled. âPanic over!â
âThe disaster I was talking about was being seen out with my little sister, stepbrother, and uncool older stepsister,â Michael muttered. Jess elbowed him in the ribs, but he hardly felt it. What were his friends doing out together, anyway? He hadnât known they were meeting upâespecially not with Rick.
âHey, Michael!â called Josh.
âHi,â said Michael.
Rick threw a look at Milly and Jason. âOff on anursery-school outing, are you?â
For a moment, Michael wondered wildly if he could deny all association with Jason and Milly. But Milly threw Rick a withering look. âOh, ha, ha. Very funny. Come on, Michael, weâre busy.â
âOh yeah?â said Josh. âWhatâre you up to?â
Michael shrugged. âYou know. Stuff. What about you?â
âWe were just going into town,â said Thomas.
Michael felt his cheeks prickle. So theyâd been about to go into town, but without him.
âWe tried giving you a ring,â said Josh, looking awkward. âBut there was no answer.â
Yeah, right, thought Michael.
âDo you want to come with us then?â Rick said.
âWeâve got to go, Michael!â Milly insisted.
Michael ran his hand through his hair trying to act cool but it was hard with Milly tugging at his T-shirt.
To Michaelâs relief, Jess came to his rescue. âHey, letâs get a move
