and she’s lookin’ to escape” Virginia was thinking she would pay Justine a visit and see if they could chat. She’s like to know more about her and see if she could help in some way.
“What’s she like ma?” George broke into his mother’s thoughts.
“She’s a tiny little thing like Laura. She has thick chestnut coloured hair and the biggest blue eyes I’ve ever seen; full of sadness though. She’s got real bad scars down the side of her face and her neck; that’s why I think she’s had a tough time and is tryin’ to escape. It cain’t have been easy for her in Boston alone. Cain’t understand why Mason didn’t bring her here where she had family”
“Didn’t Josh say her parents were killed in a hotel fire in Boston a couple of years back? Maybe she got caught in that same fire” George reminded Virginia what they’d been told after Mason passed.
“I’d forgotten about that son; it sure makes sense”
“They look like burn scars too” Alice informed them and Virginia and Nellie agreed.
“What a terrible shame for her. If she’s come here lookin’ for peace we’re gonna make sure she finds it” Joseph was determined to make sure she didn’t suffer any more.
Ben picked that moment to walk back in. “I got Dancer saddled and I’m headin’ off pa. Ya sure there’s nothin’ ya want done around here? He asked hopefully.
Virginia placed her hand over Joseph’s and looked at Ben. “I’ve decided I’m goin’ to see Justine myself so can ya go and hitch up the buggy for me please?”
Ben thought he’d be relieved that he didn’t have to go and was surprised to find he actually felt a little disappointed. “Sure will ma” Ben began heading out to the barn when his father spoke.
“When you’ve done that ya can go out with Doug and check the storm didn’t damage the fences”
“Yes pa” Ben called over his shoulder.

Virginia arrived at Justine’s and found her and Josh cleaning up the mess caused by the storm. She pulled the horse to a stop and Josh hooked the reins over the brake before lifting her down.
“Ginny, what brings you out this way?” Josh asked.
“I came to have a chat with Justine and Millie if that’s okay with you Justine?” she asked as Virginia and Josh approached Justine.
“Of course Ginny; we could do with a break from this cleanin’ up. C’mon in and we’ll have tea” Justine led the way through to the kitchen where Millie was baking.
“Ginny how are ya? What a lovely surprise” Millie exclaimed as she kissed Virginia’s cheek and Virginia kissed hers.
“I came to have a chat Millie”
“Sit down and I’ll make some tea; I just made a batch of lemon drop cookies to have with it too”
Virginia and Justine sat at the table and Millie set the tea and cookies on the table before joining them.
“I came over to ask if you, Millie and Josh would join us for lunch on Christmas day Justine. I’d like ya to meet my daughter, my two daughters-in-law and their best friend”
Justine thought about before she spoke; without thinking she ran her hand over her scars .
Virginia noticed and spoke very gently. “What happened to ya Justine?”
Justine explained about the fire that had killed her parents and told her about the piece of burning ceiling that had landed on her. She explained how her grandfather had sent her to school when she got well and, with tears in her eyes, she told Virginia how she’d come to the ranch to escape the constant taunts and cruelty.
Virginia took her hand and wiped the tears from her face. “I’m sorry about your grandfather’s death darlin’ but I’m glad you’re here. Millie and Josh will take good care of ya and so will we” Millie nodded in agreement with what Virginia had said.
“I just couldn’t take any more Ginny; I just want to be happy again” Justine sobbed. “I know I’ll never marry or have children so I think this ranch, Josh and Millie can give me what I need”
    “Why
