âWhat can I do for you?â he asked.
âI have a report that a contraband desert plant was found under your truck last night,â Grish said. âWhat can you tell me about it?â
Townsend fired an angry look at Frank and Joe. âI knew it!â he shouted. âDidnât I tell you, Diane? Theyâre a pair of liars! And Iâm going to make sure they regret it.â Townsend threw his truck into gear and sped away, showering Grish with gravel and dust.
Grish turned his face away from the truck to avoid getting flying gravel in his eyes. The pickup disappeared from view, leaving dust in its wake. âNow, there,â he said, âis an attitude problem.â
5 On the Trail
----
âMan, oh, man,â Joe said, looking at the cloud of dust that was all that was left of Townsendâs fleeing truck. âThat guy sure is acting awfully guilty.â
âHe must have something to hide,â Frank added.
Fenton nodded. âWhy would he be so testy about that cactus?â he said. âToday he was even worse than he was last night.â
âDonât mind him,â Grish said. âHeâs under a lot of pressure. The university is threatening to cut off his research funding if he doesnât come up with something soon. His daughter told me heâs spent years on this project. And if the university cuts off his funding, heâll be out of a job.â
âSo heâs feeling a lot of pressure about money,â Frank stated. âDo you suppose he could be working with Kidwell? Have you ever seen them together?â
Grish shook his head. âI havenât seen them consorting, but that doesnât mean anything. This is a big park, and by now they both know their way around it. There are a thousand places they could get together without being seen.â
âAnd then thereâs Raymond Perez,â Joe said.
âPerez?â Grish asked. âThe artist?â
âHe knows about the thefts, and we caught him eavesdropping near our campsite,â Frank explained.
âAnd then there are those desert creatures that only come out at night,â Joe said, âto talk on their CBs.â
âWhatâs this about CBs?â Grish said, his eyebrows going up.
Frank and Joe told him about the hike theyâd taken in the middle of the night and about hearing an engine and something like sentry instructions on the CB.
âI know Perez,â Grish said. âHeâs been staying here for a while. Heâs always into something, like a little kid.â He pursed his lips thoughtfully for a moment. âBut CBs? These guys must be more sophisticated than I thought,â he said. âIf theyâre using radios, it will be even harder to catch them in the act.â
âYouâll need some good solid detective work,â Joe said.
Grish looked at him keenly and then smiled. âI know youâd like to work on the case, Joe,â he said, âand now Iâm thinking, with this new informationabout the CB radio, maybe that wouldnât be such a bad idea. You two could be my eyes and ears. Youâve already turned up, what, two more suspects in your first day? Thatâs pretty quick work. If I let you get involved, though, you have to make me a promise.â
âWhatâs that?â Joe said.
âThat youâll keep me informed of everything you discover. That way Iâll feel that Iâm still in charge and following the rules. Is it a deal?â
âDeal,â Joe said.
âItâs a deal,â Frank said. âYouâre the boss.â
Grish turned to Fenton. âHow about you, old buddy?â he asked.
âYouâve got my word,â Fenton said. âBut this trip is a vacation for me, and I plan on relaxing. Frank and Joe can do all the legwork, and Iâll supervise.â
âNo, Iâll supervise,â Grish said with a laugh. âYou can visit
