Jennyâs face.
âOh my God!â she said. âWhat happened to you?â
âThe Beast,â Jenny replied.
âYouâre kidding,â said Rachel. âWhy did she go after you ?â
âI was walking home with Una, and Tracy told her to hand over the bracelet she was wearing. The one Adie gave her for her birthday. I told her to get lost.â Jenny gently scratched the swollen purple bruise around her eye. âShe grabbed Unaâs arm, and I pushed her off. Then she punched me in the face.â
âI canât believe it,â said Adie. âWhat did your parents say? Did you tell them who did it?â
âNo,â said Jenny, âand theyâre really mad about it. But if my parents contact the school, itâll only make things worse. Tracy would get in trouble about it, and Unaâs life wouldnât be worth living.â
Una arrived moments later, apparently even more upset than Jenny.
âTracy just hit her!â she squealed. âRight in the face! It was so horrible. Iâm so sorry, Jenny. This is all my fault. I just wish there was something I could do about it.â
âDonât be silly. Itâs not your fault,â Jenny replied.
âHey,â said Rachel, âI was thinking, if weâre going to try out something from The Great Book of the Occult tonight, why donât we cast a spell on the Beast? Like a revenge spell or something?â
âYeah!â said Grace. âThatâs perfect. Something we all really want. Maybe thatâll help it to work.â
âDefinitely,â said Una, her voice low and determined. âI definitely want to try that.â
When everything was arranged according to the bookâs instructions, the girls sat in a circle around a lit candle and a piece of card adorned with Jennyâs crudely drawn pentagram. Una tossed Tracyâs compass onto the floor, next to the candle. Tracy had once used the compass to try and poke her in the back, but had missed and left it lodged in Unaâs bag strap instead.
âRight,â said Grace, âIâll say the spell, and you all hold hands and concentrate on the candleâs flame. Remember, donât break the circle âtil Iâve blown the candle out.â
She settled herself on her haunches, took Rachelâs hand to her right and Adieâs to her left, and took a deep breath.
âO, Guardians of Vengeance sweet,
Give hope and power and peace to us,
Allow dark magicâs awesome featââ
âMake Tracy Murphy get hit by a bus!â
Taken aback by Unaâs sudden interruption, Grace was too slow to stop her before she leaned forward and, with one sharp breath, blew out the candle.
âUna!â she cried. âThatâs not the verse we wrote!â
âItâs the one we should have written,â Una said, frowning as she dropped Rachelâs and Jennyâs hands.
âBut what if it works?â said Grace.
âWhat if it does?â replied Una. âShe deserves it.â
She looked around at the uncertain faces of her friends.
â Relax , itâs not going to work,â she said, after a pause. âIâm bored with all this magic stuff. Letâs watch a movie.â
âNo action movies, please,â pleaded Adie.
âAnd Iâm not watching a chick flick,â said Grace.
Rachel took Adie and Una downstairs to riffle through the DVD collection in the living room, while Grace and Jenny cleared up the remains of their first venture into magic.
âYou donât think itâll really work, do you?â said Jenny.
âI donât know,â said Grace. âNo, not really. Stillâ¦â
âShe probably does deserve it,â said Jenny, gently rubbing her eye again and wincing as she neared the sorest part. âNot just for this, I mean. But for all of it.â
âYeah.â Grace nodded. âShe probably does
