of the room.  The secretary was studying us with wide eyes.
“You can go home, Suzanne.  Thanks for coming in today.”  We were almost to the elevator when he stopped and looked back at the woman.  “Oh, make sure my girlfriend doesn’t have any trouble when she comes to see me.”
Suzanne nodded.  I wondered how long it would take the gossip and rumors to spread.  It was a small town, but not so tiny that everyone knew each other.  Everyone did know who William Samuels was, though.
That night, I’d convinced Will to have dinner at home instead of going out.  I knew he was exhausted and I honestly just wanted to spend time with him in the comfort of his house.  We’d climbed into bed together and he had fallen asleep almost immediately holding me close.

“Wake up, baby.”  I heard Will’s voice faintly, as if a whisper in a dream.
Immediately, I covered my head with the sheet and mumbled, “Five more minutes.”
His laugh finally roused me from my slumber and I cracked one eye open to look at my lover.  He had an envelope in his hand.
“Sorry to wake you so early.  I was making room for some of your things and I saw this letter in one of the boxes.”  He waved the paper a little and I reluctantly sat up in the bed.
After rubbing my eyes and yawning, I spoke.  “So?  I didn’t even apply to that school and I’m not moving that far away.”
He handed me the envelope.  It was still sealed.  “I’m curious.  Open it, please.”
Of course, I agreed.  If he was that interested in it, why argue?  Will was watching me closely as I read the letter.  “Apparently some scouts for a private college in the city want me to play basketball for them.”  I had thought my school sports days were over.  “They are offering a full scholarship.”  I read it once more silently to make sure I wasn’t mistaken.
“I knew it!”  He had grabbed me and was hugging me tightly.  What I couldn’t figure out was why he was so happy.  I’d have been thrilled if it didn’t mean having to move away.  “I’m so proud of you.”  He said.
“I’m not going.”  I shoved the letter back into the envelope and tossed it aside.
William stared at me in shock.  “What do you mean, you’re not going?”  He shook his head.  “Oh no, you’re not passing up this opportunity because of me.  You love basketball.”
It was true, I did, and I wanted to play again.  “But I love you more.  If I go away, you will find someone else.  Like your secretary or a sexy client who’s a doctor!”  My voice came out louder than I anticipated.
“Don’t be ridiculous.  I’m not going to find anyone else.  That is a good school and you would regret not going.”  He kissed my cheek gently.  Silent tears were streaming down my face.
I pulled away, shaking my head quickly.  “No.  We’ll never have time to see each other.  You’ll be here working, hours away from me.”
William knew it was true.   I could see it in his eyes.  “I’ll finish up what work I can and we’ll take a little road trip to the school.   Then, you can decide.”
    “But….”  I started.
“We’re going.”  His word was final and I slumped back against the headboard, frowning.  I was afraid if I argued he’d break up with me then and there.  “Get ready.  I’ll be back soon.”  He ordered.

The car was loaded with my meager belongings when I went outside later in the day.  It seemed like I wouldn’t be coming back.
Kimberly ran up to me and actually wrapped her arms around me in a rare show of affection.  “We’ll talk all the time and visit, right?”  She asked.
“Of course, all the time.  We’ll talk every day.”  I climbed into the car when she let me go so she wouldn’t see my tears.  She didn’t look back when she ran to the house.  I figured she was trying to hide her tears as well.
William climbed into the driver seat, taking my hand in his.  “Do you
