    He nodded against her head. “We wondered if that might be the case. We did ask your people for a design, but they hadn’t sent anything by the time of our ceremony, so we were told the artwork could wait.” He shifted slightly, hoping to see her expression more clearly before explaining why there had been such a rush. “My father and Loukie’s father have basically planned our union for a very long time. I think they had always planned that eventually we would marry. Fortunately, Loukie and I chose each other so it fit in nicely with their schemes.”
    “So you’ve known each other a long time?” Cindy asked, sounding maybe just a little lost. He could understand how intimidating it might feel to try and fit in with a couple who’d grown up together.
    “We’ve known of each other most of our lives, yes, but it’s only in the past few months that we decided to entwine our lives together.” He laughed softly as he suddenly realized just how manipulative his father had been. He and Loukie would have sworn the decision had been theirs alone, but judging by how fast their fathers had moved to bring Cindy into their lives perhaps there had been more maneuvering than they’d realized.
    “I’m sorry that I messed things up for you two. It must be very frustrating to have to deal with a poorly informed human when you and Loukie should be enjoying your time together.” He went to correct her misconception, but she quickly added, “I suppose you’ll need to get back to work soon.” She looked disconcerted when he smiled. “I mean, I don’t even know what it is you do, but I assume you’ll have to get back to it eventually.”
    “Actually, my sweet mubellabina,” he said as he stroked her face softly, “our royal duties have been suspended so that the three of us can spend some quality time together. As a family we will decide when it’s time to go back to work.”
    “Seriously?” Cindy asked in an amused voice. “It must be nice to be royalty.”
    “Very true,” Eric said with a nod. He’d never taken for granted the privileges of his family’s station, but he’d also been around long enough to know that it brought with it just as many drawbacks. “As soon as we consummate our union you’ll be considered royalty, too.”
    Cindy looked confused again, and he couldn’t resist the urge to rub a thumb over her serious expression. “What we just did,” she said, softly kissing Eric’s thumb, “didn’t consummate our relationship?”
    “Perhaps in human terms,” Eric said, trying to remember some of the terminology he’d read in regards to human marriages, “but on Descon a union isn’t considered complete until it is consummated publicly.”
    “So we’re not really married?”
    “Oh no, my sweet Cindy, we are definitely married, and if you think we’ll let you go after consummating our union in private you are one very adorable, but ultimately naïve, little human.”
    She looked like she might argue the point but then said with an impish smile, “In human terms I’m not little at all. It’s kind of nice to be surrounded by people taller than me.”
    He smiled at her words and was very glad that she hadn’t repeated her little speech about leaving. As soon as she felt comfortable enough he planned to consummate their relationship in traditional Desconian fashion, and then all three of them could spend the rest of their lives loving each other. Now, if he could just find a way to make her comfortable enough sooner.
