squeeze too hard the way some men felt the need to do to assert their masculinity. The three of them made easy small talk over aperitifs and hors d’oeuvres. Serena was seriously impressed that her hosts offered real aperitifs, dry martinis served with simple nibbles of olives, slivers of foie gras resting on slender slices of baguette and crispy fried slivers of aubergines topped with a snowflake of goats cheese.
Serena loved the sophistication of it all. Her family were simple people whose idea of entertaining was barbecues and beer. Sometimes that was just fine, perfect even. Then as she got older her friends thought that the ultimate in glamour was red wine. It was served before dinner, during dinner and after dinner. Most of the time the palate became so drenched and deadened by the time dinner got served that they could not taste what they were eating which ended up with the guys ordering the spiciest possible foods in order for some flavor to punch its way through the alcohol numbed taste buds. Not here in Christine’s house.
    “Your home is just beautiful.”
“Thank you Serena ,” the couple said in unison.
“No it is not just a compliment. I studied design for five years and it is still my passion. Your home, the placement of the furniture, your choice of colors, you have created an ambience that is so restful but invigorating at the same time. Yet your work environment is so oppressive.” Oops! She had said it. She held her breath and looked down so they wouldn’t see her try to work out how to repair her verbal damage. She had only spoken the truth, the relaxed environment had drawn it out of her. She decided to just face it. “I am sorry. I didn’t mean to be so forward.”
“Please don’t apologize. It’s true. The offices could use a refurb and there is some budget for it but it so small that I don’t think any of the designers in town would waste their time on it. Unless…”
Serena held her breath. She knew it had to come from Christine. “Unless, well you just said you have done design, an d it was obvious enough that you needed to comment on it. How about you look around and give me your thoughts and ideas on what should be done. Put forward a proposal. If I like your ideas and they fit the budget, we will do them.”
Serena gulped her martini down . “Really?”
“Yes, really. Now come on, let’s go to the restaurant.”
Over dinner Serena was impressed to notice that both Christine and John drank water in between glasses of wine. She knew that was how the Europeans drank. Serena recalled the many times she would be at dinner with friends where they would just drink and drink and keep on drinking as their words become slurred and they began to slump around barely capable of staying upright even while they were seated. Mick even got too drunk to fuck. What a waste . Or he would try to fuck her but just ended up humping her for what seemed like hours on end with no finesse, no passion, just endless banging until he collapsed.
The dinner was perfect. The food was good, the company and the conversation was good. It was all over too soon.
“This was lovely. Thank you for a wonderful evening, I really had a wonderful time.” Serena got her car keys out of her bag as they stood in front of the town house. John extended his arm around Serena’s shoulders, “Oh it’s still early. Come in for coffee.” John shot his wife a quizzical look to search for approval. He got it when she smiled at him and nodded imperceptibly. John was no fool. When Christine asked if was okay with him that she invite a girl from work to join them as the new restaurant, he knew she was up to something. He especially recalled that her request came right after their wild love making where Christine admitted her fantasy to him about having another woman join them in bed.
“Yes Serena, please do come in.” Christine had that look on her face. The one where her eyes were sparkling and her mouth was slightly
