and shut the door firmly behind him.
Rob looked up from the report he was completing. âShe wouldnât? Why not?â
âBecause apparently, she doesnât like you interfering in her life.â
Rob sighed. âI was trying to help. She needs to get that light fixed.â
âYeah, I get that, but she wants to do it herself.â Jackson leaned against the closed door and shoved his hands into his pockets. âYou mightâve told me you hadnât agreed about anything with her.â
âI suppose Iâm so used to looking out for her that I forgot sheâs changed.â
âRob, she left you. You hate her guts. Why would you still be looking out for her?â
âBecause I donât hate her, and Iâm an idiot?â
Jackson studied him for a long moment, and a sick feeling twisted his gut. âYouâve already gotten into her pants again, havenât you? What are you? Fucking stupid?â
âI havenât, itâs just that sheââ
âWrestled you to the ground and took advantage of you?â
âNo!â Rob pushed his chair away from the desk and stood up. âIt was all me and she was . . .â He hesitated. âSheâs like a drug. I canât seem to get her out of my head.â
âJeez, man!â Jackson shook his head. âYou need to stay away from her until you get your brain out of your dick. Mess around with her and then try and build your stupid case against her mother. Sheâll have your ass in court before you can count to five.â
âGive me a break. I have no intention of involving Ally in anything.â Rob sat down, but Jackson didnât move from his position by the door. Eventually, Rob had to look up at him. âWhat?â
âHow about you give Ally a break, Rob? Let her get on with whatever it is she has to do here and leave.â
Jackson turned to go and Rob stared down at his report. âI donât know if I can let her go again.â
âThen talk to her before you fuck her. Find out whatâs really going on in her head and then decide what youâre going to have to do to make her want to stay.â
Rob looked up at him. âDo you want her to stay?â
Jackson paused, the door half open, and addressed his answer over his shoulder to Robâs desk. âOf course I do. I like her. I always have.â
âYou more than like her, Jackson.â
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âIâve always suspected you want her as much as I do.â
âAnd she wanted you, Rob. She made her choice.â
âBut Allyâs not a scared eighteen-year-old anymore. Maybe she doesnât have to choose between us.â
Jacksonâs gut tightened even more. âWhat are you trying to say?â
Rob shrugged. âJust that I wouldnât make the same mistake again. If she wanted us both, Iâd be happy to go along with it.â
âAre you serious? â
âYeah.â Rob held his gaze. âI am.â
Jackson struggled to think of a reply as his cock thickened in his pants. The thought of sharing a bed with Ally and Rob was something heâd consigned to his deepest, darkest fantasies. His fingers tightened on the door handle.
âYouâre doing it again, buddy. Making decisions for Ally that arenât yours to make.â
âJeez, Jackson, give me a chance here. Iâm just asking how you feel. Itâs not like Iâm going to spring the decision on Ally and just assume sheâll go along with it.â
Desperately, Jackson tried to change the subject. âIf you want Ally to stick around, finding her a job might help. Have you asked Lauren?â
âLauren hates her guts.â
âEveryone hates Ally in this town. Imagine how that feels and yet sheâs back here facing it, dealing with it.â
â All right. I get it. Iâll ask Lauren.â
