forming. Most guys would have freaked about getting a girl pregnant and especially pregnant with twins. But not Phoenix, he seemed happy. She felt a sharp poke, on her left arm and she turned to see. Max was taking her blood, and it looked weird. The tube attached to her skin drew the fluid from her and allowed it to drip into little vials; she felt her heart as it sped up. “Darling, look at me.” Phoenix’s sweet voice pulled her attention away from the tube filling with her blood. Jennifer felt a calming sensation take over her body and she knew he was doing it at this moment but she didn’t care.
“There, done. N ow Jennifer I’m going to put that stuff back on you. Lay back again.” She did as he asked, but didn't let go of Phoenix's hand. Max brought out the bottle again and put it on her abdomen. He moved the wand around and smiled. “Here Phoenix, you can look at your babies.” He handed Phoenix the tablet, and he took it with his free hand.
Jennifer watched his face; she watched his eyes filled with tears. “Which one is this?” He didn't look away from the tablet.
“That one is the girl.” A smile fo rmed on Phoenix's face. Max moved the wand to where she knew the baby boy would be. “And here is the boy.” Tears started to stream down his face.
“This is amaz ing.” He squeezed her hand.
“I'm going to run some test s on your blood, and I hope to know what you are before the morning.” He moved the wand off, and wiped her off again. “Jennifer, I don't know if you have a regular OB, but I would like to be yours. You need me to make sure you stay alive. The babies will feed off you and your energy. Make sure you eat a lot.” He put his things away and she sat up. He handed her a card. “I can come here or anywhere that works for you. I also have an office. All of my information is on that card.” He took her hand and kissed it. “It was nice to meet you. And I will call Phoenix when I know.”
Phoenix's hand tightened on hers. “I’ll walk you out.”
“No, I know my way. Enjoy your happy news.” He winked at them and walked to the door. After he shut the door she and Phoenix sat in complete silence, but he was still holding onto her hand.
“My mom is going to flip.” Jennifer said and placed her free hand on her abdomen.
“Yeah, well there is still time for you to change your mind.” She tried to take her hand away from him, but he didn't let her. “Don’t get mad, I just want to make sure you are still on board.”
“I told you before these babies are mine, and I will keep them no matter what. I don't care what my family thinks. My mom will be happy …I think.” She won't be too happy that Jennifer wasn't married, but there wasn’t much she could do about that. “What about your family?”
“My father isn’t around, and my mother hates me. She said if she ’d known what my father was she wouldn't have had me.” Jennifer gasped and placed a hand to her throat.
“I'm sorry , Phoenix. That's a horrible thing to tell your own child.” Her heart broke for him.
“I don't want you to be sorry. ” His face softened and he brought her hand to his lips. “What do you want to eat? Steak, ribs, or burgers?”
“How about pizza with extra c heese?” She hadn't eaten anything all day and that sounded amazing.
“Really? I could get you anything you want and you want pizza.”
“Yeah with extra cheese and extra pepperoni.” She smiled at him and he shook his head.
“If that is what you want, then I w ill get it for you.” She smiled at him, and she wondered what they were to each other. Jennifer didn’t want to fall in love with him if he wanted nothing to do with her.
“Phoenix, what are we to each other?” He closed his eyes.
“Darling, I’m not good at relationships.”
“I've only had one boyfriend, and then slept with a guy that wasn’t mine.”
“I think we should just stay fri ends for now.” Great, now she was getting the friends speech.
