he the one who does the hiring?â Troyâs mom asked.
âBiondi said he wants the principal involved, too, so he has some support from her. Then it goes to the school board. If they approve it, Iâm in. Should be easy.â
âAnd . . . what about a place?â Troyâs mom asked.
Seth looked at his spaghetti. âI got a hotel room in town, and if I get the job, I planned on finding an apartment. This isnât about me invading your life.â
âI feel like you should be staying with us,â Troyâs mom said. âUntil youâre settled in. Weâve got an extra bedroom.â
âI appreciate that,â Seth said, âbut I snore and itâll look better if Iâm on my own. Itâs not gonna go down well with some people if Troy ends up as our starting quarterbackâwhich Iâm sure will be the case. If Iâm staying here, itâll only make it harder.â Sethâs face lit up. His voice bubbled with excitement. âHonestly, I know it sounds crazy, but I think itâs my best opportunity to make a name in coaching. With Troy as my quarterback?â
Seth chuckled. âHeh, weâll turn mud into money. If I turn a program around overnight, Iâll have all kinds of offers. People respect a guy who starts on the ground floor.â
âWhat about the basement?â Troy couldnât help the sharp comment, and he wondered if Seth knew how terrible the team really was. âThey havenât won a game in two years.â
âOh, it canât be that bad.â Seth snorted and shoveled more spaghetti into his mouth.
âIâm serious.â Troy wanted Seth to coach the team, but he also wanted him to know how hard it would be. âRight, Ty?â
âTheyâre supposed to be pretty bad,â Ty said. âBut I havenât seen them play.â
Seth wiped his mouth on a napkin. âAt the high school level, trust me, itâs about coaching. I played in a town with a horrible coach. He got fired my sophomore year and they brought in George OâLeary.â
âThe coach at UCF?â Thane asked.
Seth nodded. âWe won the league championship my junior year and the state title the year after that. Thatâs what good coaching does.â
âThey had you ,â Ty said.
âRight, and weâll have you two guys.â Seth smiled at them all.
Thane cleared his throat. âUh . . .â
ââUh,â what?â Seth asked.
Troy dipped his face into one hand and shook his head.
CHAPTER SIXTEEN
âTY IS ALL SET up to go to St. Stephenâs.â Thaneâs face grew long. âItâs a private school. Itâs a powerhouse.â
âReally?â Seth looked at Troy.
âI . . . I guess I thought maybe he might change his mind?â It was the best Troy could come up with. He never said Ty was going to Summit, but he didnât tell Seth he wasnât, either. They both knew Troy would need a fast receiver, and they both knew there were few people faster than Ty.
âYeah, I mean, if Iâm coaching the team, we could end up as a powerhouse, too,â Seth said. âWith Troy at QB, you know Ty is going to get a ton of balls thrown to him.â
âWill you guys run a spread offense?â Ty asked.
Seth nodded. âFor sure. Hey, it might take us a season or two to turn it around completely, but can you imagine five years of you guys playing together?â
Troy pumped his voice full of excitement. âAnd if we turn it around, you know other players from Summit are gonna think twice before they go to St. Stephenâs.â
âThatâs what happens now,â Ty said. âAll the best players leave. St. Stephenâs recruits them right out of Pop Warner.â
âWait,â Troyâs mom said. âI thought you canât recruit in high school.â
âSt. Stephenâs is a
