Itâd only be temporary, of course. But while it was in that mode, it wouldnât be able to connect with the Cloud Writer.â
Elly raised an eyebrow and grinned.
Saphie grinned back. âWhich means that for a short while, you could enter or exit Rainbowville, and no-one would have a clue.â
Elly jumped up immediately. âSaphie! Where is the book?â
But Saphie looked embarrassed. âIt was a really boring book,â she admitted. âI actually fell asleep while reading it. When I woke up, it had completely turned to dust.â
Elly slumped back down in her seat. It was terrible to come so close to forming a plan, only to have it slip away.
Saphie smiled. âBut you know, I think Iâd remember what it said if I was actually looking at the Sky Scanner,â she said. âThe whole thing is going to be risky. Very risky. But letâs go to the Rainbow Lab tonight and see if I can work out what to do.â
Elly shook her head. âI donât want you getting into trouble, Saph,â she said. âIf you tell me what you remember, Iâll do it on my own. And Iâll go tonight.â
Saphie looked horrified. âAre you kidding?â Thereâs no way Iâm letting you go on a big adventure like this without me!â
Elly felt her Heart Tracker pendant glow with warmth. She knew she should insist that Saphie stay behind, but it would be so nice to have her there.
âThanks, Saph,â said Elly gratefully. Then she thought of something. âHang on. How are we going to get into the Rainbow Lab? Itâs behind a huge gate!â
But Saph smiled mysteriously. âI think I have an answer to that. But thereâs no time to explain right now. Come on, weâd better get back.â
As they left the library, Elly felt a tingle of excitement. There was no doubt that a very big task lay ahead of them. But it would all be worth it if she managed to help Jess!
Chapter Nine
N either of the Cruddleperrys were around when Elly and Saphie went to bed that night.
âEvie told me that theyâre both in the sick bay, being changed back from lizards,â said Saphie. âThey tried to blame us, of course, but the nurse guessed straight away what had happened. I bet theyâre furious!â
âIâm so excited about tonight that I donât even care about the Cruddleperrys,â said Elly, bouncing on her bed. âWhat should we take?â
âMaybe our Extreme Flying turbo boosters?â suggested Saphie. âJust in case.â
âOK,â said Elly. âBut I really hope I donât have to use them!â
Suddenly, Saphieâs face fell. âWait a minute, I just thought of a problem. A big one.â
âWhat?â asked Elly nervously.
âWe need a rainbow umbrella. Without that, we canât re-enter Rainbowville.â
Elly pulled open her backpack and rummaged around. âDo you mean one of these, by any chance?â she smiled, pulling out Grandmotherâs rainbow umbrella. âIâd totally forgotten I even had it!â
Saphie laughed and shook her head. âYou are amazing, Elly! Now, we better get some sleep. Weâve got a huge job ahead of us.â
âIâll try,â said Elly, as she climbed into bed fully dressed. âBut I donât think itâs likely. Iâm way too excited.â
But Elly must have fallen asleep, because the next thing she knew, Saphie was shaking her awake.
âHere,â said Saphie, handing her what looked like a very long, flat cushion. âPut this in your bed and tuck the covers around it.â
âWhat is it?â asked Elly curiously.
âItâs a replacer balloon,â said Saphie. âThey make it look like youâre still in your bed, when youâre not. I got them in a fairy show bag once. I knew theyâd come in handy!â
Elly pushed her replacer balloon into her bed. Instantly, it
