meet you. This is not a scam, I swear it.â
âIâve heard those stories too, but unlike you, I know better than to believe every rumor that I hear at a family picnic,â Wayne huffed.
âAunt Sarah Mae told me everything,â Gwen said.
âHow dare you bring my late mother into this!â Wayne yelled. âI donât know what you think she told you, but I have never been married. I do not know anyone named Allison Faye Matthews, and this man is not my son.â
âBut . . .â Gwen began to speak, but was interrupted.
âGwen!â Semaj yelled unexpectedly. âI said, letâs go. This is a colossal waste of time.â He turned to face Wayne and looked him straight in the eye. âMr. James, Iâm sorry we bothered you. I promise it wonât happen again.â
Without another word he stormed out of the room and rushed down to his car without waiting for Gwen. He started up the engine and was about to drive away when he saw her running through the parking lot after him.
âSemaj, wait!â she yelled.
He turned off the engine and lay his head on the steering wheel while he waited for Gwen to get into the car.
âIâm so sorry about this,â she said breathlessly as she climbed into her seat. âI was positive that my research proved that you are his son. Please forgive me. Iâm sorry I put you through this.â
âDonât apologize. Itâs not your fault.â Semaj slowly raised his head and looked over at her. âYour research was absolutely right.â
âI donât understand. If you believe that, then why did you walk out?â
âI looked into his eyes, and I saw something when I said my motherâs name. I canât explain what it was, but Iâm positive that I saw it. Then he said her whole name. I never mentioned that her middle name was Faye. He knew her, and he was married to her, but he left us. He doesnât want me. He didnât want me then, and he doesnât want me now. Thatâs why heâs denying everything. Donât you get it, Gwen? He doesnât want me as his son.â Semaj lay his head on the steering wheel again and struggled to fight back tears, unwilling to cry in front of Gwen.
âMaybe he just needs time to digest this new information. I tell you what, why donât we wait a few days, and then Iâll call and talk to him about it. Heâs probably just in shock and didnât know how to react,â Gwen said. Semaj suddenly sat up and wiped the tears that had escaped and fallen onto his face. âNo, donât call him. Iâm done. I wanted to know who my father is, and now I know. Heâs nobody to me. Do you hear me, Gwen? Heâs nobody.â
Chapter Five
Jenise dipped a Q-tip into a bottle of peroxide, then dabbed it onto the cut just below her right eye directly on her cheekbone. Looking into her bathroom mirror, she watched silently as it bubbled and cooled the pain in her cheek. All of the other bruises from her most recent altercation with her husband had cleared up and she was hoping that if she was able to heal the cut on her face she could cover it with makeup before Ellen brought Aaliyah home the next day.
âJenise, what are you doing in there?â her husband Reggie yelled.
âNothing, Iâll be out in a minute,â she yelled back.
âHurry up. I want you to see this. I got ten more followers on YouTube this week.â
Jenise stepped out of the bathroom and stared at him. âI thought you got followers on Twitter, not YouTube. What are you talking about?â
Reggie was sitting on their bed with the iPad Jenise had given him for his birthday sitting in his lap. âDang, girl, do you ever listen when I talk? Yes, I get followers on iPad, but I put up some videos of my music on YouTube, and I have people who follow that also. If the right person sees my work online, it could be my big
