here?” Stephen ask ed.
Audra quickly tug ged her hand back and slipped it into her jeans pocket. A concerned look crossed Mateo’s face, and she tried to apologize with her eyes. Jim had more of an effect on her than she ever realized. She turned to find Stephen and Chris pulling out cigarettes for a smoke.
“Enjoying the fresh air ,” Audra said.
Stephen glare d at her for a moment before retuning his attention to lighting his cigarette. Chris let out a cloud of smoke and Audra stepped back, bumping into Mateo.
“Sorry ,” she said.
Mateo d idn’t respond verbally, but she wasn’t too worried about it. She had bigger problems at the moment. Besides the fact that her best friend was dating a smoker, which increased his ‘social smoking’ standards, but the smell would now be on her clothes. She stepped around them going to the door.
“I have to go, but thanks for inviting me,” Audra said.
She made her way through the house and growing crowd, collecting her jacket and shutting the door on her way out. If she could get away with getting in the house without being stopped, she wouldn’t have to explain the smell. She zipped her jacket all the way up to her throat as she got closer to the house. As she started to walk up the walkway, she changed her mind and went around the side to peek in the window. There wasn’t any sign of anyone in the living room area.
Audra ma de a quick run to the front door, slipping inside and jogging up the stairs only to be stopped at the top. Jim slowed at the sight of her rushing towards her room, and she wrapped her arms protectively around her waist. The last thing she needed was for him to get in her personal space and get a whiff.
“How’d studying go?” Jim asked .
“Good , but I’m tired now,” Audra replied.
“You don’t look tired.”
Audra opened the door going inside. “’Night.”
“Good night ,” Jim said unhappily.
Chapter Three
“He has some serious moves on the dance floor. And that’s saying something coming from me,” Stephen commented.
“I’m sorry I missed that. Maybe next time ,” Audra replied.
“I can’t believe you left…the party hardly started.”
“You know how it is. Besides, I was really tired after getting up early,” Audra admitted.
“Chris wanted to spend more time getting to know you, since you’re my other half and all.”
“I’m sure I’ll be seeing plenty of him between study group and stuff.”
Stephen dreamily sighed over the phone line. “What were you and Mateo doing outside?”
Audra bit the inside of her cheek. She knew the subject would be brought up, but she had yet to figure out a suitable answer that would placate Stephen. Especially while he was clearly in the matchmaking mindset. She sighed right back over the line in an annoyed tone.
“Just talking about my game tomorrow.”
“So he is coming?” Stephen persisted.
“He doesn’t have anything else to do. And that’s a quote.”
“Wow…he really likes you. He’s playing hard to get,” Stephen advised.
“Or he is being honest. I’d go with that. I mean seriously, it’s Monday.”
“I wish I could bring charges on Jim for messing you up like this.”
“There isn’t anything wrong with me. I just don’t see love everywhere like some people. I see reality and normal conversations ,” Audra complained.
“You would see love if they didn’t close off every opportunity ,” Stephen retorted.
“I have to go. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“ Hey, don’t get mad at me for speaking the truth,” he continued.
“I’m not , but you bringing it up all the time is annoying. How am I supposed to live my ‘closed off’ life with constant reminders of what could have been? It just makes it harder than it already is. I don’t need that.”
“Al l right, I’m sorry. I’ll tone it down, but you have to admit to me that it’s different with him. You’re different around him.”
“Maybe , but remember he is as new
