and lots maybe I'll meet a guy. Hey, maybe getting fired will turn out to be the only way I'll have time to get out there and meet some new people.
Tonight I'll going to celebrate my freedom! I hope Victor will be working. Maybe I can get him to have a drink for a change. He's so disciplined it's ridiculous. And he's supposed to be a barman for God's sake. Geez!
Lisa felt tired all of a sudden and put down the computer, wandered back into her room and fell onto the softness of the big bed. She dreamed of elephants and tigers, oceans and mountains, waterfalls and great lakes. And most of all, she dreamed she was walking along a deserted beach without a care in the world, humming a song, smiling and feeling the warmth of a hand in her hand. A firm, strong hand, and the more she felt it, the deeper she slept, and the more she slept the further away her old life seemed.
* * *
Lisa looked stunning in a long white cotton dress with her long blonde curls brushing her shoulders. She felt refreshed after her siesta and she enjoyed the late afternoon sun on her face and the warm sand under foot as she walked down the beach and into the bar.
Maria looked up and beamed. "Feeling better now Lisa? I told you everything was going to be ok."
"Much better thank you. I just got fired."
"What? Oh my God, I'm so sorry. What happened?"
"It's no big deal. A blessing in disguise really. To be honest, I hated that job. Life was passing me by and I hadn't even noticed until I came here."
"The Lord moves in mysterious ways Lisa. He has new plans for you."
"Maybe you're right. Anyway, I'm going to take a year off to go see the world. I spoke to my older sister and she thought it was just what I needed. She'll rent out my house and I can forget about work for a while. Hey, maybe I'll meet someone special."
"Good for you Lisa. You'll have a great time. You should talk to Victor before you leave Mexico. He's travelled a lot, he could give you some good advice."
"I will. Gee, he's such a nice guy. What's a handsome gay guy like him doing working in a beach bar anyhow?"
Maria laughed, "You're so funny Lisa. A lot of people say that but Victor is as straight as they come. And he's not the barman either. He owns this bar and that hotel you're staying in."
"Really?" Lisa was gobsmacked. Two illusions shattered in a moment. What a day this was turning out to be. "You're kidding me right?"
"No, Lisa, Victor is a sensitive man, very disciplined and very successful. And straight."
Lisa smiled, "Maybe I can party with Victor before I fly off then."
"Don't even think about it my friend. Victor never dates tourists. He got divorced last year and he's still getting over it. He doesn't mess around, if you know what I mean."
"Okay, I get it. We've all being there."
Maria frowned. "Where?"
"Okay, maybe not you, you've got life sorted out."
"Hey I'll have another water please."
"More water, that's twice today Lisa."
"Yeah I know, kind of embarrassing after my week of tequila. I've decided to get back to being me and doing what makes me happy. Tomorrow I'm heading back to my yoga routine, on the mat for sunrise followed by a swim before the town wakes up. I love that time of day."
"Good for you, I never did like yoga, I always am afraid I'll hurt myself."
Lisa laughed, Maria always cracked her up with the way she said things. "So, you said that Victor owns this place."
"Yes, and the hotel."
"Wow, I suppose that explains how he can afford to dress so well. He really is the best dressed barman in town."
"He doesn't usually work in the bar. This week my cousin, Jorge, is in Chiapas, it's 24 hours away on the bus. His sister just had a beautiful baby so Victor told him to take an extra few days off so he can be with his family."
"You're kidding me. That would never happen where I work, or, where I used to work. Life sure is different here."
"Victor is different. The other bars, the staff changes all the time, the bosses are very hard
