joined him at the bar. It was the lawyer, Hackett.
âThere you are,â he said. âIâve been looking for you.â
âBuy you a beer?â Clint asked.
âWhy not?â
Clint signaled the bartender for two more.
âWhatâs on your mind?â
âThat poker game I promised you?â Hackett said. âIâm having some trouble coming up with players.â
âThatâs okay,â Clint said. âI may not be around that much longer.â
âOh?â Hackett said. âIs the sheriff running you out of town?â
âNo, nothing like that,â Clint said. âJust time to be on my way.â
âI see,â Hackett said. He finished the beer, set the empty mug down. âWell, Iâm sorry we couldnât square off again at the table. Maybe another time.â
âMaybe,â Clint said. âOh, and by the way, thanks for the help with the sheriff.â
âNo trouble,â Hackett said. âI just told him what I saw.â
Hackett waved and left the Spur.

Jenny got out of her bed, saw her brother Jason standing by the front door. The door was open and he was staring out.
âJason, whatâs wrong?â she asked.
âNothinâ.â
She came up alongside him.
âSomethinâs on your mind.â
âI just wish I could go lookinâ for Pa myself,â he said.
âWe need you here, Jace,â she said, taking hold of his arm.
He looked at her and said, âI know. Itâs just . . . heâs out there somewhere, probably in trouble, tryinâ to get some money for us. I just wanna help him.â
âYou are,â she said. âYouâre helpinâ him by takinâ care of us.â
He looked back out the door.
âClint will find him,â she said. âI know he will.â
âI wish he could leave right away.â
âHeâll go as soon as his horse can,â she said. âI trust him, Jace.â
He looked at his sister again.
âYou better get some sleep.â
âYou, too.â
âI will,â he said. âI promise.â
The cabin had two bedrooms. Jenny shared one with her sister, Jesse. Jason shared the other one with Simon.
Jason stood in the doorway a few minutes longer, then closed it and went back to his room. He tried to get into the bed he shared with his brother without waking Simon, but the boy stirred.
âWhatâs goinâ on?â he asked.
âNothinâ,â Jason said, âgo back to sleep.â He settled on his back.
âJace?â
âYeah?â
âYou ainât gonna leave us, are ya?â
Jason turned his head to look at his little brother.
âWhat makes you think Iâd leave you, Simon?â
âMa left,â the boy said, âand Pa left.â
âMa died, Simon,â Jason said, âand Paâs cominâ back. And I ainât leavinâ.â
âPromise?â
âYeah, I promise. Go to sleep.â
âYes, Jace.â
Simon closed his eyes.
Jason stared at the ceiling for about ten minutes, and then his eyes closed.

Clint went back to Amyâs later that evening and knocked on the door. She opened the door and smiled at him.
âI was hoping youâd come back,â she said. âAre you hungry?â
âI could eat.â
âCome in,â she said. âI have something on the stove.â
He walked in and took a deep breath.
âIt smells great.â
âStew,â she said. âI made it myself. Sit.â
He sat at the table and she returned with two bowls of fragrant, dark stew.
âCoffee?â
âPlease.â
She set it in front of him.
âI made it the way you like it,â she said. âDark and strong.â
âWow,â he said after one taste, âthis stew is great.â
âSecret ingredient,â she
